Hiya all, Had Kimini up on ramps a few weeks back and have only just managed to ask this now!! anyways, i got under the front of her and found this hole in the casing(?). Now, i dont know alot, but i have a fair idea that its probably not a good thing. Its been 10 years since i drove her last, so coulda been there a while ![]() ![]() So assuming that it is a bad thing, how does one fix this? repair? replace? My car is still a looooooooooong way from finished, but i'd rather find any drama's now, rather than later!!! |

There is a seal which fits in the hole to keep dirt out 22A285. Its not a critical part, but it does keep the greased up gear change knuckle joints clean and smooth. Its easy to install, just drop the four large bolts just behind the seal which hold the remote gear change and install the seal. Otherwise, other people use a silicone sealant to make a plug in situ. Whatever way you do it, it would be best to clean it out and give it a dollop of grease when you do get around to it. http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx? ... 672&title= ![]() |

It is an easy one. If you get the seal, you only need a 9/16 socket or spanner to do the job. It will drop down, and when you go to put it back up it will need a little bit of wriggling of the gear change to get it to reseat.... but it's easy peasy.. |

![]() ![]() ![]() It's the only place on a Mini where I use Silastic (silicone sealant). It works as well as the proper rubber plug but I don't have to go buy one. ![]() |

I can't help myself but replace it when it's missing. My anal retentive alarm start chiming and that's it. |

What is the purpose of the hole? Is it for putting grease in? |

I wondered if it was clearance for the factory's casting machining process? |

![]() ![]() ![]() even when you were racing on dirt? sealing up the hole keeps it from being a nice gravel scoop to gunk up the grease in there and wear out the linkages silicone works the best ![]() |
