I was poking around under the bonnet just checking things and noticed a plug lead seemed loose....
No.... a spark plug was loose! And had discoloured.
A little mystery explained....Every now and then under power the little MG would sound like a Suburu...a kind of funny off beat.
Doesn't do it any more. :D

put a proper exhaust on it, then you'll only get the sound when you want it - or give the car to me, either way is good ;)

No never!

However, when a Mini sounds like that, you're just running on three...

Don't get me wrong it sounds good when your going places, but just in low revs ~2000rpm when say cruising at 60kph its a bit annoying. Really love the sound of the engine and turbo when you put your foot down though.

Its got nothing on the rotary though :D

Not having a go at your choice in car or exhaust system, but do people with horrid sounding cars know they sound terrible, or don't they notice because it sounds ok to them inside it? I've heard some absolute abominations emminating from the exhaust of some cars, surely the owners wouldn't do that on purpose would they? Or is it because they paid alot of money for it and have decided to live with it until it falls off and slides it's way to the edge of the road?

Just like B&S utes. Just because it's load it doesn't mean it sounds any good.
Thank god they're thin on the ground now.

I'm currently listening to Targa drive past my front paddock - a lot of them sound like microwave popcorn.

Yeah, sure, they're for racing not hearing, but it's not a good sound. And why do the local bogans do the same to their holdens?
