Post subject: | quick voltage reg question |
ahoy chaps and chapettes, just a quick one, few years back i changed my alternator to one from a modern car (not sure what one off the top of my head but it was one of the ones recommended on here), but i cant remember if by using this type of alt makes the voltage regulator redundant can anyone shed some light on this for me thanks in advanc trent |

I think there is an article in the How To section that details how to modify the regulator when an alternator is fitted |

The original external 4TR or 8TR regulator used on the 15AC alternator is redundant when a later (internally regulated) one is fitted. You can leave it there or remove it, your choice. The multi connector can be left plugged in, or unplugged without detriment. The only circuit in it that gets used is the brown/yellow wire (ind lamp). This runs from the alt > connector > lamp. |

You did not tell us what Mini you are fitting this alternator to weather it has already an alternator fitted or the old Genny / Dynamo. You need to be a bit more specific as one could mislead you to do something you do not wish to do. One thing that comes first when fitting an alternator to a mini make sure the battery is Negative to earth. Also what sort or type of Alternator would help giving the correct info on. To me even brand name or a part number will help as I have all specifications one could want on these things. It is not a difficult Mod but you need to be careful and sure of what you are doing. Words of advice...When doing electrical Mods on cars do not do quick jobs... LUCAS WIRING SMOKE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND THESE DAYS. |

thanks for the replies guys I thought it was redundant. Convertible, my mini is a 73 clubbie with an alternator, i had already done the alt conversion a few years back but while im currently fixing some wiring, i decided to clear out any wires that arent needed, and i vaguely remembered when i did the conversion that id no longer need it but i just wanted to make 100% sure before i pulled it out, thanks again all trent |

That is what I meant Jim, Getting it out of the wiring is easy, many people do it without much effort at all. I get cars like that all the time. Buying the smoke and putting it back in to make Electrics work again is the hard part ! |

![]() At best a temporary fix. If it's German could be ok, if its Chinese no good at all. I've heard Bob Marely smoke fixes all problems. |
