Crack test before you grind it, cracking is common in these.
Of 6 big J cranks that St George Cranks got in to grind a while ago, 4 were cracked already.

Make sure that it has not been offset ground to make a stroker. Check which rods it was used with !!! Might be a stroker !!!

Dye penetrant crack testing, either a two stage (red dye then white powdery paint) Dye penetrates the crack, then bleeds back to show through white second coat.

http://www.twi.co.uk/content/ksijm001.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dye_penetrant_inspection

Or fluorscent dye penetrant, spray the crank, then look at it under fluorscent light to see where dye has penetrated crack.

http://www.marinediesels.info/repairs/c ... ection.htm

Both these techniques (I think) can be aided by magnetising the test piece to concentrate the dye into the crack.

Measure the diameter of the bigends. I'm not sure of the numbers off the top of my head but you can grind these down to accept the 'S' conrods, and if you offset grind these you can either increase or decrease the stroke of the engine. I think it's covered in Vizard's Tuning The A-Series Engine (the yellow book).
