 Post subject: Trailing arm castings?

Okay so I went and measured this and on the 2 rear trailing arms I have 3 thrust washers at 1-5/16th and one at 1-7/16th what the hells going on?

The numbers on the trailing arms are "21A399C" and "21A398 MLEYS" does this sound right for a 63 850?

Are they correct left and right castings or are they completely different to each other.

Sounds like a "pair"

My MK 1 parts book shows the numbers as 21A392 & 21A393 but these are the part numbers, you may be looking at casting numbers.

The thrust washers are probably "mix-and-match" as that's what someone in the past needed to do to get them to work...

The Left & Right arms are different but while I have P/Ns I don't have casting numbers. The early arms have same size thrust washers on the inside as the outer, but the later ones had a bigger washer on the inside.

how later is later? I dont need to know the exact year just whether it was a clubman thing or a rover thing etc.

No much earlier, I don't have a date, but would say around 61 to 63.

The numbers I have refer to hydro and dry. (The Mini Deluxe book and the Mini Clubman book)
The Mini King catalogue says the same as the BMC/Leyland Parts books.

Dry numbers are 21A392 & 21A393
Hydro numbers are 21A1485 & 21A1489
Moke 13" numbers are AYK7042 & AYK7043 (just adding them to complete the set for future reference)
We are just missing the numbers for the very early welded steel 850 ones.

Early arms were:
2A 7343 and 2A 7356

Change point was around 5500 cars UK about the same time they went to aluminium struts.

Was that also the time they went from the Bush + Bush to Bush + Needle Roller Bearing on the Trailing Arm Pivot Pins?

Appears that this may have occurred later around 8900 cars Morris UK. My parts book shows the bearing but is not included in the parts list. However there is a change of the lubricating tube at this point from a straight tube (presumably to service the 2 bushes) to a tube with one end that is flared to service the needle roller bearing.

Confirmed this change point with both UK and Oz parts lists. Interestingly there is no listing for the inner early bronze bush just the lubrication tube.

any thoughts on what the MLEYS cast into one arm means, its in the arm with the larger washer, so presumably the later one.

My mini is a 63 and could well have been the change over point, I cant find any other mods that would indicate anyone has put any servicing effort into it, and trailing arms aren't exactly a wearing item.
At least Id like to think my mini is unique.

From the info I have the fabricated arms were changed around Nov/Dec 1960, the fabricated trumpets were changed around 3/61. But as the poms were stock piling to sent stuff out to Aust chances are that they sent the "old stuff" here so there are cars made here from superceeded parts.

But there seems to be a cast arm that had bushes each end and then they went to 1 needle and one bush. I have a pair of cast arms with 2 bushes and the casting shape is different. No idea what year they are off just some spares that I picked up.

The shafts for the 2 bushes had a grease nipple each end.

The welded type arm on my 60 car have a part No. stamped on them so I can get the No. off them. The car is buried at the back of the shed so it will have to wait until I shift all the cars so I can get to it.

Im quite sure I dont have the very early welded arms, one arm has mleys cast into it so Im assuming that leys is leyland so I have at least one later arm.

Theirs nothing wrong with either of them Id just rather a pair so I don't ask this question next time I tear them down.

Not necessarily true. I've seen rebuilt, complete trailing arms for exchange at Mini parts shops before along with good second hand setups for sale. As the bush can wear out if old and not maintainted (yes I've replaced one before on my later 850) the job will most likely require some basic machining, which is often a little bit beyond the backyard mechanic and as such change overs, or good second hand trailing arms are used. These can be swaped in or out efficiently and very easily. Which is probably what has happened to your car. Out of curiosity, is it the drivers side that has the odd sized washers?
