i pulled off the dizzy cap and have noticed black marks after the points inside the cap, i put on a new electronic module.

do i undo the pinch bolts and rotate it anti clockwise to get it back or forward

But if you turn the dizzy anticlockwise it will retard the ignition

seems that it is firing just after the points, the plastic casing is showing signs of being burnt.

If i understand what your trying to say, then thats just what happens.

As the distributor rotor turns around it lines up with the posts in the cap. This gives the electrical charge a path to the spark plug. So any signs of being burnt or whatever is from the spark jumping from the rotor to the post.

Changing the ignition timing will not change the path the spark takes, but it will change when the spark jumps in relation to the crankshaft.


So in short if your concerned, either put up a picture of the cap or show it to someone in the know, or just buy a new cap. But from what i can understand of your description of the cap, it doesn't sound bad.

Is there a reason for you looking into this? Are you chasing a problem?
