I'm putting my motor together - I've never put gasket goo on the oil pump gasket, but I think I read somewhere that some people do it...

advice from the gurus?

If it is an ordinary paper gasket (without some rubbish coating) then it shouldn't matter either way. I usually do use goo just to be sure.

I'm not a fan of silicone gasket stuffs here, in case a squeezed out bead gets into the oilway, but I like a bit of Loctite No.3..
It costs nothing...

I don't use anything, even if it leaks it won't lose much and a small oil leak on the inside of the engine doesn't matter.

If it leaks on the suction side it may get an air lock in the pump when it is parked.
If it leaks on the pressure side it will reduce the available pressure.

Either way it won't matter.

Never used any goop on the oil pump gasket, just made sure both surfaces are spotless.

Never had any oil pressure issues...

cheers

Just another idea you could use some avaiation gasket goo/ permatex i found it to work well on all paper gaskets but as the other have said use it sparingly as you dont want to squish the excess out everywhere and possibly interfer with anything

Permatex #3 aviation cement is now called Loctite #3. Same stuff in the same bottle with the same brush.
