Post subject: | Mini Tuning Help - Perth |
Hi, i have just replaced my radiator, reconditioned the head and placed a kit through my twin SU's. The mini starts but it runs really rough and i have to keep the throttle on, otherwise it will stop. Any ideas or suggestions on what I should try to fix it? If there are any mini tuning experts that is willing to help me out it will be appreciated. Thanks Roc |

Sounds like it may be sucking air, maybe the inlet manifold is not sealing correctly, I would check that first, or maybe the rekitted carbs, were new linkages fitted? |

Sorry I meant to say throttle shafts not new linkages. |

I have used a new manifold gasket and its all tight. I used the old linkages though installed new springs. I showed my rebuilt carbs to my mini mechanic and he said all looked good, so I am a bit of a loss on this |

Are the carbs balanced correctly and is the adjustment of throttle linkage correct. As in, do both butterflies open at the same time as the accelerator pedal is pushed down. |

I Thoroughly checked all the linkages etc. The general concensus is that it is carby related, could it be something to do with the timing? |

Doesn't sound like it. Is it a regular 'miss' or just general rough running? Check that you have all gaskets between the carbs and the manifold, with heatsheilds, spacers etc, it is easy to over look this. What sort of manifold gasket are you using? Black 'soft' one or hard red one? Is the manifold actually tight against the head? If the flanges between the inlet / exhaust manifolds are different thickness's, they won't seal. Has the manifold and plugs or bungs in it? Check they are sealing. Got a PCV crankcase vent set up? Sealing OK, PCV Valve not leaking? Got a brake booster? Disconnect the vacuum hose and block it off to see if it makes any difference. Is the piston(s) in the carbs moving OK, not sticking? Jets clear and no crap in them? Choke coming right off on both carbs? Check that the jet under the carbs is seating home. What air filter set up do you have? Gaskets / mounting plates etc not blocking the vents for the Carb Piston(s)? Vents for the fuels bowls open and clear? Fuel OK? Fuel Pump pressure in the right range (3.5 - 5.5 PSI) ? Done a compression test? Pics of you set-up? |

Hi, i have tried all the recommended actions. Thanks everyone for your help, though the poor mini is still sounding like a tractor. Any mini tuners in Perth willing to help me out is appreciated, I am trying to get the mini ready for the Classic Car Show at Whiteman Park in March. Thanks Roc |

Got the HT Leads on the right way? The dissy spins anti-clockwise. No. 1 is at about the 1:30 position, going A/C from there is No. 3, then No. 4, then No. 2 |
