Here are some photos of a steering wheel I'm developing for the roundie (3 1/8" dish) This wheel is 15" in diameter. The original is 15 3/4".
Although when the time comes for production, I could be persuaded to make it a bit smaller.
The photo is a mock-up made from wood and aluminium. There are few styling details needing attention, but this gives a very good idea what it will look like.
The idea is to produce a wheel with the look of something that could have been made in the late 1950s and 60s.
Something specially designed and styled as an option for Minis.
Most after-market wheels are copies or variations of the classic Moto-Lita and consist of two pieces, the wheel boss and the wheel.
This one is cast as one piece. It will have a hardened alloy frame with a forged tapered spline. Instead of the original Bakerlite or sometimes plastic rim and spokes, this one will have a resin finish giving the same look and feel but considerably more robust and resists shrinking and cracking like the original never could. It will also come with a good looking horn button.

Soooo......What do you think?

Will it need to be ADR approved for road use?

not for Minis that are not subject to ADRs

Some later models might have an ADR requirement for crash padding, but I have never seen an aftermarket wheel that has this kind of padding.

I've put quite a bit of research into the ADR side of things. And for wheels with out air bags there seems to be pretty well nothing.
Before 1970 ADRs for the most part did not exist in Australia.
Morris 1100 will know the exact dates and rulings on these things.

Yes.... been giving that idea a bit of thought.
I was thinking of pale or powder colours. But quite open to suggestions.

I am thinking about spinning one up out of aluminum.

The steel joint down the road sells it in up to 30cm diameters.

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

What I've been looking at is the original BMC colour charts.
Most old cars had the outside colour as part of the interior look, eg tops of doors, the dash or dash rails in Minis.
So I've been considering providing something tonal or sympathetic with the original colours.
IMO the steering wheel should be a shade or so darker than the pale body colours and also with light coloured interiors.
We're very use to having a black or at least a very dark coloured wheel.
Having it colour coded would tend to look bland with the lighter colours.
And it's much easier for me! I don't have to worry about precise colour matching.
I'm uncertain if I would be able to do custom jobs. Although when the time comes, your request maybe possible
if it did not require precise colour matching.

I'd love one in white.... then i'll cover the outside with leather to match the interior of my car
