How on earth did they even market this (quite largely) useless 'Pickup'?
Was it always perceived as a fun car; taking the piss out of bigger utes, or were they dead set on it being useful to many people?

How on earth did they even market this (quite largely) useless 'Pickup'? Was it always perceived as a fun car; taking the piss out of bigger utes, or were they dead set on it being useful to many people? Curious

I've always liked the utes - they're kinda like a motorised wheelbarrow. Some of them came with the 850, didn't they? I'd like to see someone with a trayfull going uphill... I still like them.

They were aimed at the country farmer who only had a small farm, and could use the pickup to get in and out of town, but still carry a bale of hay (One!) or a calf (small one!) if needed. All in the UK of course. How successful that was I don't know, most farmers probably had land rovers

They were pretty serious about their marketing of the Pick-ups, but you have to put this in to the context that the situation and variety of similar vehicles at the time was considerably different in the UK to here. Remember too, that the vans are esentially the same size, and were a great success. It could also be argued that the success of the Van didn't help the Pick-up. |

As far as i know the only 2 genuine utes (or at least 2 of the only genuine vans) belong(ed) to Alpine moke. One which he restored and sold on, now belongs to Oldschoolgarage in wagga. Can see a small picture of it on the website: http://www.oldschoolgarage.net/ The other, is currently being rebuilt by Alpine Moke at his home. And damn it's nice |

Genuine pickups there are a few about. Lil Ute has one One of the canto boys have one with a cross flow in it and clubman front end My brother has one I know a bloke in sydney who's got one to restore, he imported it from NZ recently I know another bloke in canberra who has one in his shed to restore (was imported from uk years ago) There is also a mint yellow one around (was one of the genuine shells john smidt bought in from the uk ages ago) Thats about all i know of, and i dont know that many people, so im sure there would be plenty more. Genuine utes differ to cut down vans because the back of them where the tailgate is slopes on a van where as on a pickup it is verticle. There would be lot of cut down vans out there. Lil Ute is a chopped van. Its a high quality job, better than factory in many ways, but its not a genuine pickup. The pickups were intended for things like urban deliverys in large cities, perfect for London, but not much good in Bourke. Suzuki managed to sell the mighty boy and they're even smaller in the back. The Mini pickup wasn't hugely successful, they were the smallest selling variant. Tim |

No offense if it is genuine lil ute Pretty sure that one's genuine. Dean Canto's ute is genuine too, but has had a Clubby front grafted on to make room for the 8 port head, EFI and BIG air filter. |

Here there were quite popular, farmers had them or small companies selling gas bottles! The one from the above pic has not the correct tail lights, correct ones are the same as rover P4 / Morris J2 van . Cheers Luis |

Cheers Luis Yes they are suppose to be the same as rover p4's, they are sorta like a stepped lens, like these (I think the utes had a chrome retainer though, not sure) (kC1QRBNW620wvBw~~_12.JPG)
The picture of the ute above is of a cutdown van though. So i think has panelvan tail lights |
