Hi all there is a nasty rumor that is floating around here in SA about E85 fuel and just wanted to see if anyone else had heard anything if it .. We are being told that we won't be Able to run this fuel on historics Any more because it wasn't avalable in the racing period .. And that it's octane was to high for this class of racing ... I call bs but that's just me ... Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers beanie |

well just run it on 110 or 120 avgas, or nitro-methane ,or any alcohol as all these "fuels" were available . If they specify a "pump fuel" then let them come up with some good old leaded 110 otherwise tell them to get real |

It is all in the 2011 CAMS Manual mate .... there is a section specifically about E85....has to be premixed..not homemade +a few other things. |

CAMS has basically separated E85 from the ULP types of commercially available fuels is all. As said above it is tightening the restrictions on home brews. No different to what they did with home brewed PULP years ago. Toluene anyone

1. Pump E85 will rarely ,if ever ,be 85% Ethenol from the pump.It varies from 70% to 85%. This why CAMS changed the Fuel Specs. 2. Get caught adding Toluene to a Race Car will definitely get you in big troube ,mate. You "may" get away with it once,but if you are randomly selected for a full Fuel test [at any time on Race Day] which involves a sample of your fuel being sent to a laboritory for anlysis & it fails , be prepared for a fine or a holiday from racing.[or both] Obviously for a Street Car you can do as you like but not on a Race track. Dave ...[DA9jeff's Dad PS... 4 cars were tested at ameeting last year..2 had "yellow " fuel [98 Ron]], the other 2 had a pretty blue coloured sample... guess which 2 had to visit the Race Stewards & explain??

We run E85 in our mini which we use for street sprints. We have a 'supplier' for the real stuff (V8 supercar fuel) but we have run the pump stuff as well. Our engine is not wild (1310 - 79hp at tyres) but we have not noticed a difference, but we are yet to test the 2 versions on the dyno. Pump is yellow, and smells like PULP. Proper E85 is green/blue and smells like methanol. We also run M2 Candy mixed in. |

as people who are actually using it - have you had any degradation of rubber fuel lines etc.? do you drain it all out at the end of each event? |

^^^^^^ "the pretty blue fuel" is AVGAS which is a nono in most classes.

Have not noticed any rubber degration yet. The fuel pump we use is rated for methanol, so it sould be fine. Depending what we are doing with the car after an event, sometimes we drain it, sometimes not. We were running 2 carbs, a Delorto (E85) and a Webber (PULP), as E85 is jetted much richer than PULP. But now we can buy E85 (or E70-85) at the bowser, we will prob just stick to the Delorto for race and street duties. If we start to notice anything unusual, ill post it up. |

I have been running E85 in my race car for a couple of years now, see no degradation of fuel lines dont drain it from the tank, it is left from on race to the next. Most modern fuel lines dont get effected If you have the original lines fitted may have issues but if they have been changed in the last 10 years they should be OK. I dont have a carby though it is EFI. |
