| Post subject: | Brake Shudder - Whats the Issue ? |
when i apply my brakes they shudder.. can you tell me what the problem is ? - the car is a Rover 1988 with all mid 90's running gear and a late 90's Subframe - the car was in a minor RHS front quarter accident around 5 months ago (but has been fully fixed since) - the car has been wheel aligned within 2 weeks - has had new shocks/calipers/pads within the last 4 months (with no sporty driving ie. they shouldnt have gotten boiling) - the ball joints and tie rod ends are fine (been checked/adjusted within the last 2 weeks) - you can feel it through the pedal - you can feel it through the steering wheel slightly my only guesses are - wheel bearings ? - wheel balance ? (wheels are brand new -2 weeks old) - somehow the calipers have warped within the last 4 months? any help would be much appreciated Nick |

Maybe a disc has warped or a brake drum has bent? Had some gorilla do up the rear wheel nuts (to tight) of late? You can check it with a dial gauge or if you don't have one, a bit of bent wire and a good eye will do the same. To check the drums, take them off and put them back on reversed, be sure to put the screws in to hold them in the right place. |

its quite possible they have done the rears up too tight.. the fronts could be warped but i have had them replaced just before the accident.. the wobble definatly feels like its comming front the front wheels... |

If the steering wheel shudders as you brake, then its in the front, but if its only in the pedal, then it's most likely the rear. |

was in the front before i got the ball joint adjusted and the wheels aligned.. but its MUCH better now.. ill double check it then.. |

its just the pedal as far as i can tell.. ill have to get the rear brakes checked out |

If it is just in the pedal it could be the rears. I had a similar problem and found that the drum was not centering on the axle. Found the studs were a loose fit in the drum holes. These were new spaced drums. Fixed it by spinning the drum and observing the out of round. Used a rubber mallet and tapped the drum on the side to centre it then tightened up the retaining screws. Wheel back on and all OK. I susspect there are different wheel studs, some of which are a snug fit in the drum, holding it in the correct place. |

Simple but over looked thing, check the wheel nuts are all tight and caliper bolts are tight too. |

i'd be guessing the rear brake drums are warped or worn unevenly |

after driving too and from work today, i can definatly feel the shudder through the steering wheel and pedal |

Have you had them really hot? I suspect warped rotors. |
