I'm trying to change the driveshaft seals on the diff housing and I can't remove the old seals. Any tips on how to get the old ones out? |

Does anyone have a tip? I've tried prying it out with a screwdriver but it just pulls chunks off. Any ideas? |

What you are doing usually is good enough. A long screwdriver levering across the seal from the other side is usually enough to get one side up. If all else fails you will simply need to take those side covers off. Half a dozen short bolts on each side. Keep the drip tray (and a pair of diff side cover gaskets) handy! |

Just put you lever in a little further before trying to pry them out, but not too far so as you end up gouging the aluminium housing. The seals do have a steel insert in them and that is what you want to try to hook under. |

A trick I was taught by an old fitter when I was but a pup on how to remove seals even with the gearbox full of oil is as follows 1. take two pieces of 3 to 5mm daimeter rod approximately 200mm long. Bend one end at right angles for about 20mm. To the other end braze or silver solder or weld a self tapping screw approximately 15mm long. 2. Drill two holes 180 degrees appart the root thread diameter of the self tapper into the face of the seal. Screw the two rods into the seal. 3. Using a hammer tap on each of the rods until the seal is removed. If you have a suitable slide hammer attach this to the rods. I have removed many seals in this manner with little effort Good hunting |
