Does anyone know if there is a definitive law regarding running competition numbers on the street? I had heard a line of black electrical tape somehow made it 'legal'. I'm ready to number up for this weekend!

It is illegal to have the 'white spot with a number' however, you can leave the white spot on, but you have to remove or cover over the number. A cross through it with electrical tape (or any tape) won't cut it.

It used to be illegal but I don't think it is these days in NSW. I see a lot of cars on the road with numbers.
Even the NSW Police have numbers on their cars.

If you want to make sure ring the local Police station.

I'm not sure of the background for this archaic law.

I'm allowed to put race car stickers on my car, a large rear wing and drift body kits, so why not a number?

What if I just like numbers?

It was something about "competing in an illegal competition" or something like that.
In NSW in the 80s it was the done thing to cover the numbers but it seemed to go away about the time that the Police cars got number on the roof.

I see a lot of cars going to Wakefield with numbers on them.

So the number 80085 could be seen offensive?

I also see no point in simply pulling a line through the number. If there is such a law that doesn't let you have numbers, what is a line through it gunna stop exactly?

The photo would be seen as obsene.

I suggest you type that number in to your calculator.

Nothing in the traffic act in QLD forbidding it, at least when I was a police officer a few years ago. I believe the traffic act of 1974 has not changed. I drive around in the Bathurst car in full livery. Have been pulled up and questioned about the legalities of the car but never any concerns about the numbers.

Yes, as Austin850 said. For ACT anyway the tech standards guy said that it was totally fine to run with a number and I have never been pulled over for it

Variety bash cars seem to not have any trouble with numbers or stickers, not up this way anyway, there must be at least a dozen of them running around up here .
