Hi All,

Have a small issue - when on the throttle, getting fuel starvation to the point that the engine cuts out. If I pull over, let the fedtro electric pump catch up, then I can drive a few more kms until it starves again. When pulled over I checked the clear filter in the engine bay and only a trickle was entering.

I thought OK, blocked filter on the inlet to the pump, but it looked fine.

Put it back, tested the pump, and nothing but a trickle into the clear filter in the engine bay again!

So I thought I'd take the hose off the inlet to the filter in the engine bay (to see what the pump can push out), and the clear filter is all pressurised with air. Is this normal? It explains why it couldn't push any more fuel in (it wouldn't even get half full with fuel) and it was only coming in at a trickle...

Is it as simple as a blocked fitler in the engine bay? It looks clean and is reasonably new..
Is there anything in the carb that could be stuck or blocked causing this? I'm useless with SU carbs..!

edit: carb is HIF44

Any suggestions greatly appreciated...

Thanks!
Tim.

I experiences something like this on mine once. It ended up being the Fuel bowl vent ... I had it connected to the tank breather hose. It needs to be open to air... so the fuel bowl can fill up.

Has the pump or car sat for a long period without use?

I was thinking that.. Will go check if it's still connected to nothing... I think that's how I had it set up!!!

nup it isn't connected to anything. If I run the fuel pump for a minute, then disconnect the fuel line at the carby, it's under pressure there still as well (after the pump is turned off), so it's not a blocked filter

normal? abnormal?

not when it started failing, it had been driven for 2 weeks straight, fresh fuel.

it's like it's getting an air lock in the float bowl or something... could the float have a leak in it? I'm not sure what the symptoms of that are!

I would put me money on float valve sticking shut.
I rebuilt su carby not that long ago and had similar problem kept running out of fuel and I started to realize it was happening more when I parked on a hill and hot days.

The float valve was new and I didn’t give it a second thought……until it was get annoying and I started to pull the carby apart to find the gremlin.
Every time I blew down the pipe and lifted the float every thing would shut off and reopen………..still don’t know why but it wasn’t until I really pushed on the float hard I got it to jam.

At a closer look the float valve was the ball bearing type but this one had two ball bearings……..ended up finding another one that only had one ball….
If the float has a leak the valve would not shut off properly and you would find fuel leaking out of the air vent side of the lid.
And make sure the vent is free
Cheers neil

thanks all for advice...

all I've had time to do is take the fuel filter off from in front of the electric pump, it looked fine, but flushed it out.

anyway everything seems to be fine. I don't think it was the filter, but just took her for a drive and she drives like she used to, as though nothing had been wrong.

the only difference is ambient temp, it was about 34 when the problem happened, today is low-mid twenties.

anyway, I love my mini, she fixes herself - the temp gauge started working today for the first time in months! :D

Where is the electric pump located?

under the tank, on the subframe, on rubber mounts, at the correct incline according to the diagram!

Well that's that theory out the window!

Sometimes if the pump is mounted too high they can get a vapour lock.

do you have a Heat shield between the carb and Manifold to protect the carb from the exhaust. also is any of the fuel line anywhere near the exhaust.

Check the fuel line pressure while going for a drive.

ok well an update:

I thought I'd fixed it with new plugs, she ran beautifully, til this morning. But when it ran great, it had been fairly mild weather. Today is a lot warmer, so I think ambient temps are having an effect on it.

Today it was much worse, would only drive 500-1000m, then need to pull over, let fuel pressure build up a bit (ie ignition on so fuel pump ticks over), then take off again, rinse and repeat. Some homeless looking guy on his pushbike kept passing me and eventually asked what I was looking for! (vic plates in NSW)

I also noticed that it would die at full throttle quite easily when I pulled into the driveway, and also cut out when throwing it around tight right hand corners.

I have a work car now so urgency is not as high as earlier, so going to pull the carby apart and see what it's all like... never done one before either so either way it will be a learning experience!

Tim.

just out of curiousity... how much flow roughly should you get coming through the filter with one of these electric fedtro/facet 3-6PSI pumps? ie just a trickle, a litre a minute? :?:

took the carby off, tried to pump some fuel into a bucket to clean it all up, and what do you know, just a trickle coming through from the pump!! grrr...

it's not the filter, fuel runs fine through the filter, tested that!!

Don't know specifically what the Facet Pump specs are, but you would want at least 600 ml free flow / minute for a mini. Before you condem the pump, check the lines are OK.
