ok so the rocker cover on my mini keeps leaking. is there a reason?how do i stop it? the new gasket does not seem to be doing enough, do you use any goo? I have a morris type gasket do you think maybe it's not tall enough and they could be hitting with my roller rockers? |

Try spraying one side of the gasket with spray adhesive and attach that side to the rocker cover (ensuring it is clean first), the run around the face on the head with a razor blade to clean it up - then fit the rocker cover and it should be leak free! Remember not to overtighten it! |

I glue mine to the rocker cover with contact adhesive and use Permatex/Loctite No3 on the other side. The No3 allows it to be removed and refitted easily when checking the clearances. |

I'm with the Doc. Ditch the tinnies and use an alloy cover. Big flat surfaces; lots of area to keep the oil on the right side. |

I've had very few original ones leak, but I do go to some lengths before fitting to make sure they won't leak. I have had some alloy ones leak, but usually from the grommets or mostly from the filler caps

I use tin ones and have had them leak. I've rubbed grease on both sides of the gasket, that works, an old mini enthusiast told me that. Although I now use copper gasket cement in an aerosol can. Spray both sides of the gasket wait until tacky then bolt together. Make sure you degrease both metal contact areas first though. Copper gasket cement can also be used on head gaskets too. |

it's leaking form the back.. i had oil on my extractors & it was burning a fair bit of grey smoke from behind where it was leaking.. I never had this problem before with my old New mini spares alloy cover. this is the one below.. it's really pissing me off! so some cement glue no 3? ill get some tomorrow.

Cork gaskets tend to bow inwards at the middle, front and back, when fitted in the steel covers. Early covers (eg. 850 ones) had nothing to stop this. Later ones have 2 strips of steel spotwelded inside. Check and see you have them. They keep the gasket straight. If the gasket is old and flattened, these 2 strips can hit the head, THEN the gasket leaks. Don't expect the gasket to last forever....

I took my air filter off, and found that the whole back of the engine was covered in oil. What's more, it looks like the rocker cover has bean sealed with silicone or something similar. Whatever it is, it seems to work now - no oil leaking, I think the oil that's there is the remnants from before adding the silicone. So, is this a bad thing? I think that if the original ones were cork, the silicone should be fine, right? |

Funny, I recently put my tin one back on instead of my usual alloy one and it leaked like Julian Assange, new gasket and all. In the end I ditched it and went back to the alloy one. |

Hmmm if they seal with the alloy one and not the std tin one, it sounds to me that they're being done up too tight, either crushing the cork or squeezing it out of the gap or both. cheers Jacob |
