Just got under the car because last time I drove it I felt there was a weird vibration that isn't usually there.

Up on stands and I found this:

Obviously the rubber has started to part company with the internal metal cross and has caused the uni to rotate out of centre and that is what was causing the funny vibration. The rubber on the ends has been slowly degrading for some time but it never appeared as though it was separating from the internal metal cross...until now.

The worst part was at the time I couldn't find any other than these so I bought and fitted them anyway. I knew they were on the way out so I had some QL5000's sitting in the garage ready to change over. Even though they were only $60 at the time for the pair I now have to pull the engine out to change the diff output flange and fit a new flange to the drive shaft :x

If you are running these crappy rubber uni's I would suggest changing them sooner rather than later.

/rant

No need to pull the motor, the drive flange yoke can be done in the car, just pop a balljoint out on that side to get room.

Thanks for that Kev. I was thinking about it and have just arranged a hoist for Saturday because I didn't think I'd get the car up off the ground far enough otherwise.

Does anyone know how thick the split pins need to be for the castellated nut at the diff? Are they the same thickness as CV's?

They are thinner, quite thinner. At a guess maybe half the thickness of a normal cv split pin. Or maybe not quite.

Sorry for the vagueness
