My apologies if this is a road well travelled.

On first blush, these look like bloody good value.

But that extra $100 only gets you the bare head.

For $2250 you can have a complete head

Yep, was talking to a mate today as old as I am and he used to drive minis. He asked me, 'When does it stop being a Mini?'.

A good question and I had to stop and think just how far I would mod my car to suit me and yet still be a true mini. :?: :?: :?:

Interestingly the Weslake 8 port head is now available again, still in cast iron. For a few good reasons.

I've had a Pierce 5 port head on my mini for 4+ years now and it's been no problem at all .GR gave it a port job back then as well.
That price is a bit high , you can get them from Pierce manifolds direct for $890.

Ahhh oops that will teach me for not reading the add, and jut looking at the display picture and not scrolling down.

Was is wrong with alloy heads exactly (apart from the fact that if overheated they warp very badly) Wouldnt being like 1/2, 2/3 the weight be a good reason for the use of an alloy head?

They have remade the weslake iron instead of the alloy ones produced a few years back because the alloy ones were not homologated/approved for racing because they were not made from the same material as the ones that were raced.

You often hear of the weight reduction of changing to an alloy cylinder head. Yeah, they might be 1/2 the weight, but they really didn't weigh much to start with. Surely, if you're going to spend $2000 on weight reduction, you can do more than halving the weight of the cylinder head.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to such things, but I'd guess that using an alloy head on an iron block would be a little less 'stable,' since both materials will react differently at different temperatures.

I very much doubt the performance gain of halving the weight of the cylinder head outweighs the issues that you face with alloy such as easily shreading spark plug threads and manifold stud threads as well as the warping you speak of...

A head is what, 8kg? I am sure you can ditch the rear seats and your spare tyre for more gain than 4kg...

Weight is not the reason I bought a seven port. If you know me you'll understand. ;)
For a couple of grand I got a complete 7 port head and two 40 Webers. I recon I can get good performance over the cast 5 porter that I have at the moment.
Advantages of the alloy head over cast iron? there are many, MANY.
As for having an alloy block on a cast block? geezus. You don't know cars.
Time to move on lads, H beam rods, alloy crossflow heads, Megajolt ignition, Pulsar distributers, Charade alternaters etc, all made for performance, economy and reliability.
If you want your car to remain 100% original that's fine, I understand, but for me I'm moving on to better things.
