Post subject:  break failure HELP !
hey guys , as you know im a new member and a newb to the mini scene , i was almost in a car accident yestaday when the break decided not work in traffic , luckly i was quick and turn into a small street using hand break

I notice the break was losing pressure as i was pulling out of a carpark , i try to pump it and it was back to normal then the break completely didnt work at all , can anyone help me by suggesting what is the problem or experience this themself ?

would it be the master cylinder ? cables ? oil ? i have only got the car for a week aswell it was fine until yestaday

First off check to see if thier is brake fluid in the master cylinders both the brake & clutch. I think you have a clubby so it will the plastic type in the engine bay in front of where you sit. If it low which I'm thinking it will be its a matter of filling them back up again and bleeding the Brakes which we'll run you throw it

First thing to do is to have a look around the system for any fresh leaks,ie: check the
level of the fluid in the Master cylinder, and for any leaks around it as well, then have a look around the inside of each wheel to see if there is any fluid leaking from your wheel cylinders or brake lines. If your not sure what you are doing , ask somebody on here to maybe have a look for you and give you a diagnosis .
It could turn out to be something simple , or maybe not , but if your not sure, DON"T
drive it, it is not worth the risk, get it looked at by people that know.

well you dont have very far to go for parts

mg spare parts 97 - 103 Victoria St
Smithfield, NSW

http://www.mgspareparts.com.au/index.ph ... mid=100001

will have all the parts you need to fix it im there all the time getting stuff and are what i reckon are the cheapest in sydney

Thanks guys , just say if the fluid is low what type do I use to top it up ? And where is the master cylinder located on my leyland , same as everyone else in the from of the driver side . I might it's more then just fluid because the brake is completely gone , no pressure what so ever ! If worst case scenario I have to replace the master cylinder , how much it cost and is it easy go replace myself

If your standing at the front of your car , with the bonnet up, look towards the rear of the engine bay on the your left hand side, you will see either 2 plastic cylinders attached to metal bodies ( master cylinders , one brake , one for the clutch ),. These should have
brake fluid in them, they both use the same fluid, have a look at the level indicator to see how much you have to put in them, ( don't overfill them , DON'T spill the fluid on any paint , as it will eat your paint ).
If you can find a mini manual, have a read of it , otherwise do a search on here for some more information.
When you said that the pedal had nothing at all, it could be a couple of things as well, turn yourself upside down and slide yourself under the steering wheel, up under the brake and clutch pedal and with a torch, have a look up at the top of the brake pedal and see if it is still connected,you can tell this by moving the pedal a little until you see just where it is connected, it should have a split pin , or a small clip that looks like an "R "
hence why they call them an "R "clip. See how you go .

I know im stating the bloody obvious here but mate, DO NOT DRIVE YOUR MINI, not to work tomorrow, not to a mechanic, not to a spare parts shop.

I had a friend of mine tear apart a young family of 4 and kill himself because he thought hed make it to the mechanics with no brakes. The young family will never see their daughter grow up. You dont need that sort of Karma, no one does

No wonder people are leaving this forum with smart ass comments like that it's the closest place for parts to him the guy asked for help and if you can't help him then kindly find another forum to talk crap on or dont comment at all and also they are cheaper than other places I've called in recent years

Sorry for saying anything.
I just did't see where he was asking where to buy parts that is all.

My advice minilee is if you do not have experience with brakes is to either take it to a professional or get a very competent fellow ausmini member to help you out. Getting some one to come and help would be my choice (as long as they do know what they are doing) as then you will get some hands on experience, which trust me will help with owning a mini.
If I was local I would come and help out.

well he is a new person to the forum and i think i can let him know where to get parts from if he needed them since fairfield if just a suburb over from smithfield id wouldnt wanna travel kms out of the way if i knew there was a parts place just about around the corner from me thats the least i can do since i aint there with his mini trying to locate the problem with it
