Post subject:  running lean?

Hi,
my friend has recently acquired a mini clubman with a 1275 engine (we believe it has been bored out a little, not sure how much).

Anyways it has the 1.5inch carb and it only seems to run well with the choke out. With the choke in it seems like its not getting enough fuel.

Is this carby too small for this engine, or would it just need adjustment?

Another thought i had is that there could be a vaccum leak?

If you put your finger in the throat of the carb and lift the piston by about 1/16 to 1/8" how does the engine respond?

If the engine dies then it is too lean, if the engine's rev's pick up and run faster it is running too rich. If it slightly rev's up and then settles back down again then it is about right at idle. All this should occur when holding the piston in the carby up. This does not take into account if the engine has a needle that is really wrong with it.

there's a big nut under the carb, unscrew it a couple of flats with your fingers

Only unless it has the incorrect needle fitted.

It does sound like ^^ might be the fix, but it could also be a bit of dirt in the bottom of the jet (that's what the needle slides in to).
