Post subject:  Seatbelt options for deluxe

Hey people,

Looking into seatbelt options for my deluxe, as I have them installed at the moment the inertia reel and anchor is at the same spot but it looks untidy, so just wondering if anyone can shed some light on:

(I've checked vicroads site and not finding anything)

A: Can I fit 4 point belts in place of the original 3 points?

B: If I relocate the inertoa reeler into the rear pocket, and attach it to a plate bolted through the floor (not the bin) would it be a suitable attachment (realising it may have to be engineered).

A) no idea

B) why doesn't it fit in original spot neatly? you may need to modify the mounting plate so that it can sit upright on the original bolt by trimming it slightly. Nothing drastic. It should fit and look neat??

I just want to move the reeler alltogether, so after opinions of if through the floor with a captive plate would sound strong enough.

No idea what the metal is like under there but if you fit ADR style captive plates with the nut welded onto the plate, I don't see how this would be any weaker thant he original mounting hole at the bottom.

Will definately need engineering certificate if moving mounting points around.

I am just wondering if it's worth it. Take a pic of it and show us what you mean?

Are you talking about mounting them like they would be in a later clubman?(seat belt comes out through where the ashtray would normally be?) If so, I'd think the inertia reel would have to be mounted off the sill, as the angle of the reel is critical for it locking in an impact. You'd need a captive nut with a plate welded inside the sill for that. Not much fun, and engineering would be essential (to be legal).

This is what I'm thinking: A matching plate under the car would be fitted to stop it ripping through the floor.
(illustrated is for the passengers side, its a funny shape because the floor isn't level in the bottom of the bin)

Are we talking about the Clubby type inertia reel seat belts here ????

This has been discussed a few times in the past if it is those. The major problem is that the B pillar has been substantially updated in the later models to support the strain of the extra mounting point which effectively acts as a snatch strap.

It increases the mechanical efficiency of the seat belt to the point that its likely to pull the B piller inwards in a reasonable accident.

People say that if you are in that sort of accident then the cars deformation is going to be significant anyway but the extra mounting point does substantially increase the load on the pillar and its a load it was not designed to take in the earlier minis.
