ahoy there chaps and chapettes,
as my title suggest i want to know about what happens in a carby or more what should happen, BUT i dont want the whole engines 101 version, i just want to know what i should see when im attempting to start my car.
Basically ive just finished a fix of my burnt out loom that happend about 2 years back, and today was the day i turned the key for the first time. (i cleaned out the old fuel and replaced it with some brand new stuff). The car turns over WIN number 1, and all electrical things work WIN 2, but the car wouldnt start. I checked if i have spark and i do WIN 2.5, but no broom broom. So i thought it might be a fuel related issue.
I took the air filter off and had a look inside the carby "throat" by lifting up the dash pot and there was a pool of fuel behind it. I thought that doesnt seem right so i got my wife to turn the car over while i had a look at the carby to see what it does, and what a saw was..........pretty much nothing. The dash pot only slightly jiggles with each pump of the accelerator. Is it meant to raise and lower? Or are carbies secretive little devils keeping their secrets hidden until the car starts?
A bit of background info that might be important.
The engine is a 1275 A+ and has one of bens SC12 supercharger kits with a HIF44 carby.

There is no mechanical connection between the dashpot piston and the accelerator pedal, it only raises and lowers in relation to the amount of air being pulled through the carb. So when you're trying to start it, there is a relatively small amount of air being pulled through, so it won't do much.

If you get a torch, and lift up the piston you'll see the throttle plate that's attached to the accelerator pedal. Pumping the pedal doesn't do anything with an SU carb

A pool of fuel sitting behind the piston isn't a big deal - just means you're getting fuel in there so it's a good thing.
