Post subject:  side mirror legalities

Hey all

I was driving my mini home from work today and the copper pulled me over for no reason whatsoever apart from driving a mini and it looking dodgy.

Anyway thought he knew it all and I was telling him how little he knew etc.. Real loser actually, made me pop me bonnet and then thought i had air-con  (was the oil cooler and pipes). made me unload my boot so he could look at my battery. Then tried to say i had the wrong battery in it, cause the standard battery clamp was loose.

He also tried to say he could sit me on the side of the road and he could search me car for a defect

Oh he also suggested maybe i shouldnt drive such a small car if i couldnt see his lights on behind me because i am a largish fella (we were going down a hill and he was in a paddy wagon) and i mean who constantly looks out their rear view mirror, and im not gunna see his roof in my mini anyway

Anyway He reckoned i had to have a mirror on the side of my car . It passed blueslip without one and my old mini used to pass pink slips without. there are holes there for one.

Am i legally required to have one it is a 12/71 GT?

I had a bit of a search on the internet buut couldnt find if i was required to have one.

Thanks Brenton

They certainly had them in '71 so I'd assume that they were an ADR requirement, Leyland wouldn't have paid an extra $5 to build them unless the were required to.

I think they had one on the drivers side but was not required on the left.
My 1970 Mini and most others that vintage never had one there.

Yair, it was a requirement to have one on the right hand side.
Left hand was optional, made mandatory much later on (80s maybe?).

Hmmmmm.....reminds me of a coppa who asked me to remove the 'Competion Numbers' from the rally car. Was parked and he waited for my return.

Anyways, the year that the RH Door Mirror became mandantory for Passanger Vehicle Manufactured from 1st January, 1972.

For the nay-sayers;-

Did he record the incident?...I think they do these days. Might be worth approaching his superior to request a copy. It might be enough to scare him out of his arrogance.

I'm looking at a sales brochure for a 1971 clubman and neither the clubman or GT have any external mirrors

Ask some hard questions but first make sure you pull your phone out and press a couple of buttons on it, then say "Officer I will be recording this interaction" put the phone in your top pocket.

Questions:
-Were you tailgating me deliberately so I couldn't see your lights or do you normally drive so aggressively close?
-Are you suggesting I have broken a law without knowing what that law your trying to refer to?
-On what basis do you have reason to search my car and how did you come to that reasoning?
-Are you suggesting that size is a mandatory specification? Have you had this suggestion to your smaller superiors?

Finally:=
I drive a small car so idiots who drive large cars don't have as much of a chance of hitting me! How close did you get?

** If you broke the law you should pay just like the rest of us, but getting harassed just isnt on.**

Does that brochure have an options list?

In 1971 the only options were radio and heater.

I was looking at a photograph of one of the first GTs made that Leyland presented to the Press. It had a bullet mirror fitted a fair way back on the door and at quite an angle.

The heater was an option?

G'day Bubba, you had your car at Goulburn didn't you ?, ( white !! Gambier tourquise GT,
parked down the bottom end of the street on Sat ) and you were not parked not far from me at Wakefield. Anyway , back on subject, i would say you would of at least have to have a drivers side mirror, but by the sound of it ,old mate was just trying to nail you for something when he pulled you up, and they reckon its not revenue raising, yeah right !
