Greetings All. ('64 850 with Wand 22A1288 box) I have a bad whine accelerating and deceleration in my 850 wand 22A1288 box. It's constant in all gears. When I get to (say 60kph) it has a "sweet spot" where the whine goes away eg: "Coasting" Am I thinking right that it's bearings? I have a couple spare 22G68 box's, however, they have remote shifters. If I was to rebuid one, will the Magic Wand type diff housing simply bolt on (R&R)? Others say it's typical 'Morris Whine", but I'm sure it's too loud. I rebuilt the motor, and took a chance on the box (Damm) PS: I'm hearing some bearings are better than others. Something about plastic cages that fail? Are there GOOD bearings? I don't suppose there's a compatibility list somewhere to show what boxs suit what blocks and shifters? Cheers Alex. |

Mmm yes a chance that doesn't often pay-off with mini gearboxes, especially these days when they're all worn out... Your whine sounds like drop-gears as willy says, could be gearbox or diff bearings as well, hard to know without being there to hear it with my own ears. I'd build up another box ready to go 
All the boxes will take small bores, but if you want big bore then you need to be more picky cheers, Jacob |

The should just interchange..HOWEVER... they were individually machined at the factory. You need to check very closely how well the faces mate together .... You can be lucky and ok... or unlucky and they will never fit together cleanly and will leak oil etc etc... (Never tried this myself... but that is my understanding.. others may have first hand knowledge.) |

If a bearing is on its way out metal gets in the oil & will stuff your new engine. |

Thanks All. Sounds like I can put something together. Mind you, it may be easier to yank the motor out again and see if I can resurect the original. Cheers Alex. |
