What kind of price would you be looking at to import a car or a shell from the UK?

If I recall correctly the cost of a container a year ago was around $3500, add insurance and import duties, cleaning.....it adds up.
Then to register you have to bring it up to relevant ADR's. In QLD it is much easier if you import a car older than 1971.
Also since you live in OZ and are not moving from another country you will be liable for higher import duties since you will not be able to claim this as a personal import. Be sure to check the import restrictions imposed by the government both local and federal. An import permit is required before any vehicle arrives in OZ.
If you are looking at something valuable like a Cooper S then you may also try South Africa as there are still some rust free examples around.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of Minis with rust around that came from Japan.

A Japanese Mini would be cheaper to source because the purchase price is generally lower and the shipping is a competitive route, so it's cheaper. Shipping is about $2K from Japan to Aus, plus duties etc.

If you are thinking of bringing in a new Heritage shell, I don't think anyone has sucessfully registered one of those here yet...

Also have a look at Malaysia, a very underrated and underused source of complete Mini's, shells and parts

Post subject:  re importing

will depend on what the car is and its condition, as size does make a difference
if its driving you can do roll on roll off, if not rolling then a container is the only option
cars before 1988 are fine after that you need to get full compliance which can be cheap if a popular model like a skyline or evo $2000 but niche model like minis or ferraris can range fron $4500 to 12k
containers from the uk arent that cheap if you want it done properly and professionally dont expect much change from 3500pounds, and the costs and regulations incurred once it reaches OZ will cost at least $2k plus duty/gst
most cost effective would be to put the goods in with someone else that has space left in a container,if your not in a hurry we may be able to help you out on that front as we might have some space left in our next container due to leave in 4 to 8 weeks time (will of course depend on the car size)
cheers josh
