I have a tricky question

I went to replace the temperature sender on my 1275. Apparently i have a south african engine.
I went to minicraft here in perth and the mechanic said that for my smiths guage there is only one type of sender that can be used. My sender was a different size with an adaptor - he said your guage musnt be reading correctly and sold me the correct sender.

Now this sender does not fit into the block, its a different thread. Yes i have removed the adaptor ! I tried it on a 998 engine from a parts car i have and it fits perfectly.

Do these engines need a different sender??

All the UK or Oz 1275s have a temp sender hole with a 5/8-18 UNF thread.
No idea what your SA head has, I would have thought it to be the same.

Is the sender in the head below the Thermostat? It may be that a previous owner could not get the correct thread and tapped it out to suit the adaptor. On my South African 1275GT I have always purchased parts from Minispares UK and not had any issues with them fitting.

What is different about the sender unit for your Smiths gauge?

the sender unit is a lot smaller, but it goes into an adapter which has a slightly bigger thread. It sounds like your right and its been tapped out.

Oh great now to find a temp sender that works, or maybe i'll just use an aftermarket guage

If you can tell me the thread in the head I can turn you up a brass adaptor which is 5/8 UNF inside. Cheap...

You can also put your old sender back in, get a hold of a thermostat housing that takes a stock sender and fit your new one in there.
