I'm dismantling my CV joints but I didn't mark position of the cage and inner race before I removed the steel balls. My workshop manual says I should have, how important is this?

I've never worried about it and never had a problem because of it.

I was hoping you would say that :)

Now the fun game of how the hell do I separate this recalcitrant hub from the CV?!

Been trying that since last week, no luck at all!

Remembered I had a rear hub puller tucked away in a box - can I bolt it back up to the drive flange and use that to drive it off? At the moment I have the CV outer + hub stuck together on the small section of the drive shaft (or whatever that is called).

Disc Brake Hub?

<EDIT> Sorry, just to be clear here, are you trying to get the CV out of the Hub (and bearings) or get the drive shaft out of the CV?

Ah, I wasn't very clear there - checked my manual  Trying to separate disk brake hub from CV. BFHs have proved spectacularly unproductive!

OK, BFH is usually not a good way to go. Either a press or a bearing puller. Sound like the CV may well be stuffed. They usually get like that when they have been run fo a while with the CV nut not as tight as it should be and the bearing wear gooves in the shaft of the CV.

Okie dokes, thanks for the ongoing counsel :) I'll bolt up the hub puller next weekend and see if I can't get a result. Not sure of the condition as it came off an old car long out of rego. Spare hub and CV in the cupboard if it all goes pear-shaped :( 8)

Ah, no luck

CV, bearing and hub still locked together. Because it's not on the car, my bearing puller can't get leverage, and I don't anything to bolt it all down to. Asa last resort, tried using a piece of wood to spread the BFH load on the end of the CV, but still no effect.

The CV does feel a bit "notchy" in a few places but rotates freely. Ideas?

Not 100% sure if you mean that the CV feels notchy to rotate or in trying to slide it through the bearings (which it's quite stuck). Time to get serious - use a workshop press. Maybe you local friendly garage / workhop can help out?

Slightly notchy to rotate, no give at all through the bearings - will have to find a workshop!

I'm guessing both the CV and hub are knackered. If the drive shaft is out of the outer CV, start over with new hub, bearings and CV...also new tapered washer and hub nut. Swap over the ball joints if OK too.

Obviously you have the drive flange off. If its face which meets the inner race of the outer wheel bearing is OK...NOT recessed, you could use it again.

Yeah, I'm thinking you might be right, if it takes this much effort and it still won't come apart  In any event, I have new hubs, bearings, CVs, flanges, ball joints, hub nuts, rotors and pads that I bought a while ago before I got these old brakes. I'll try to locate a workshop that can help first, though I don't know any of the locals...
