Hi Everyone, I have just torqued up the camshaft sprocket nut and before I do the crankshaft bolt I need to put the timing cover on but before that the oil thrower. I have a 78 leyland "S", which is a late model. In my Gregories service manual it says that on early models the concave side of the thrower goes towards the timing cover, which is how it was when I first took it off. However, there is a letter "F", meaning front stamped on the thrower which is opposite to how it was when I took it off. Does it matter which way it goes on, or was it on wrongly in the first place ? I am tending to putting it on with the "F" facing outwards. As I said does it matter ??? Jethro |

I think the concave points inwards, following the shape of the timing cover. The concave bit sits fairly close to the timing chain. I'd doubt if there's any difference between early and late models. Maybe the F doesn't actually mean Front 
just check that it will actually go on both ways - IE you might be able to put it on with the concave bit facing outwards, but it might scrape on the timing cover |

Hi Simon, according to the parts breakdown it shows the thrower and underneath the picture it says "F" mark denoting front. So if you think the concave goes inwards then that puts the "F" stamping on the outside which is the way I am reading it to be. Which means it was on the wrong way in the first place. When you think about it you are stood at the front of the motor so it should have the "F" facing you when you put it on. Jethro |

Jethro so it does - page 19! then yeah, must've been on the wrong way, because it should sit with the concave side facing the motor. So it doesn't scrape on the timing cover or the chain then? |

there did appear to be a mark on the face of the thrower but nothing on the inside of the cover, strange. many thanks Jethro |

Scanned this from one of my manuals, might help. Just noticed in the original post your reference to 'early' and 'late' models the pic is taken from an early model workshop manual, don't know if there was any difference between early and late models.

Early ones used on 850, 997 Cooper etc are too wide to use with a duplex chain. Later ones are almost flat, they are fitted with the concave side towards the chain.. |
