Guys just for a laugh I thought I would check my engine as when I brought it a long time ago the guy told me it was a 1275. And I was just starting out in Minis so pretty much took his word. The thing is that the prefix starts with and N. I gather the engine number is on the one on a little shelf bit below the first cylinder? Anyway any ideas what it is also the series is N947716P, given that the first number is a 9 I am worried that it is a 998 or something. Sorry of the long post.

Cheers

Matt

amazing. i just got home from my parent's place, where i have a bunch of recently acquired mini stuff. i went through some of it this afternoon, and i have a block with the engine number "n968136p", and was just coming on to ask someone about it. i too was told it was a 1275, but it came with a bunch of other stuff, so i wasn't too fussed either way whether it was or not.

It's a POLICE number.
These are allocated when a block (eg new from BMC) has no number.
I've had several over the years. N661771P, N68????P, and N891501P.

Your code is N (for NSW) 94 (year issued) 7716 (number) P (fuzz).
Other states have a similar code- Canberra starts with C (or is it A), etc.
Simple..

What happens is (was back then, anyway) you take the motor to the cops with a receipt, they allocate a number, you go where they say and get it stamped, then go back and they check it.
Nowadays maybe the Blueslip stations do it, I dunno.

1. Does it have side covers at the back of block? If not it's a 1275.
2. Is the heater outlet on head at an angle? If so it's a 1275 of some sort(head, anyway).
3. Is there a metal plate near the fuel pump at back? If so see wot it sez..

don't the 1275 S blocks have the covers at the back as well?
Apart from the 1275 plate rivetted to the back, one of the Vizard books has a flowchart of questions on how to identify which motor you have from memory. Also includes the variants we never got like metros etc from memory.

KB this seems to make sense the plates at the back (or not as the case may be) as I remember that my old 1100 block had the inspection plates and this 1275 doesn't. And also I would pretty much take Doc's word on most things... :)

Yes an S has covers (as do all small bores) but all the other 1275s don't. So if there's none, it's definitely a 1275 (but non-s).

BTW you can't always believe engine nos these days- I've seen 1275S blocks with 850 numbers, a 1275 with 1098 number, 1275 auto (1100S) with 998 MiniMatic number, etc.
Jeez some people are pragmatic...
