 Post subject: Cyl head nuts / bolts

Hi everyone, sorry to be a pain again regarding torque wrench settings but on the torque settings page in my Gregories book it mentions cyl head nuts and bolts. I presume some mini engines have bolts in the head and some have nuts, as the torque settings are different and I want to get it right, so as my engine has nuts for the cyl head, the book says for cyl head nuts for all models except 1275 UK models the setting is 40 lbs ft where as the settings for cyl head bolts for engines made in Aus is 45 lbs ft. I don`t know if tightening the head to an extrs 5 lbs ft will be a problem if I got it wrong and used the higher setting. With all the brain power used in timing the cam in, I think I have become paranoid about getting everything spot on. I think I should chill out a bit. :? :? :?

Hi GT, all my cyl head fasteners are nuts. The studs ( threaded rod ) are screwed into the block and I lower my cyl head over these, then screw the flanged nuts on to the studs to tighten down the head. Also included in the cyl head nuts are the nuts holding down the rocker assy. These are the nuts I am talking about and reading the Gregories book, it says the cyl head nuts should be 40 lbs ft. No mention of flanged nuts in book. So are you saying flanged nuts torque to 50 lbs ft ???

Yes, torque to 50 ft/lbs because the bolts have a UNC thread on them into the block, where as studs and nuts have a UNF thread on them.

do I torque all the nuts to 50 lbs ft even the rocker assy nuts ???

The Flanged Nuts with the Conical top Studs are fairly late and so unlikely to be covered by the Gregory's Book. Just to be 100% clear in regard to the ones on the Rockers that you are refering to, the ones to torque down to the figures I gave ^^ above are the larger diameter ones (3/8 UNF in fact) at the rear of the rocker pillars. The smaller diameter ones (5/16" UNF) to the front of the rocker pillars are only torqued to 25ft/lbs.

I'd suggest when torquing down your head to do it in say 3 or 4 or even 5 stages, starting at 10 ft/lbs on all in the correct sequence then going up in 10 ft/lb increments until your 'there'. When re-torquing between steps, back the nut off about 1/4 turn beforing 'going again'.

Ok GT, I see what you mean, i will torque the 9 3/8" flanged nuts to 50lbs ft and the remaining 4 5/16" rocker assy nuts to 25lbs ft
