Post subject: | Oil pipe - block to filter housing |
Just went into the local hydraulic place to look at replacing a kinked pipe with a hose. Figured no big deal, there's been plenty of discussion on here about it. Came away knowing less than I did when I went in! Can anyone please confirm the actual thread sizes for the block and filter housing? I have the list of part numbers drmini used to use, but got confused when it mentioned having one of them recut. There was a guy there who was supposedly a 'mini guy', but he was no help. He reckons the block fitting is SAE "but not one that converts". Converts to what? No idea, he was against the whole idea of a hose anyway so I wasn't in the mood for asking him questions. I'd love to be able to walk in there with a list of local part numbers to show him..... Oh and push lock hoses seem to be devils work according to them.....maybe I just chose the wrong place to try? |

The one in the block is UNF. I usually take them a banjo bolt and they make an adaptor from that, or if you get a hold of the adaptor that was used on the Ozzy Engines, these were BSP where the pipe screws in. The Oil Filter Head is BSP. |

UNF and BSP, OK, anyone know what sizes? I don't want anything open to debate if I go back in there. |

Block is 5/8-18 UNF, standard filter head (both sorts) is 1/4 BSP. Beware, some aftermarket filter heads now are threaded 14?mm not BSP. Karcraft and others carry the Cooper S block fitting nipple, which is 5/8 UNF x 1/2 BSPP. |

Thanks for the replies. So where does SAE come into this....it doesn't? Problem here with Pirtek parts over here is you have to sell your first born...and I only got one kid so that won't go down well with wifie. Quite partial to him myself actually ![]() If I get time I'll go see this "mini expert" again tomorra.... |

sorry should have read the post correctly Basically the AH-08-06 Nipple needs to have the thread recut on the end to a 5/8 . The hydro place may be able to it for you. The cost should be $60.00 nzd from Pirtex Ta Bernard |

SAE in automotive cirles stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. I have never seen an SAE Thread, but some people seem to refer to UNF as SAE for some reason ![]() |

Yup got it. But the BSP end was the one they seemed to think was no problem off the shelf. I just think this guy got himself off track relying on his memory and wasn't even really looking at what was in his hand. |

A looooooooong time ago (before `unification') the now UNF was called SAE. Or just NF. I don't use the Pirtek nipples now - I buy brass 1/2 x 3/8BSP and 1/2x1/4 BSP nipples instead. Even Bunnings carries them, cheap. |

It's probably likely that what was in his hand was affecting his memory as well as giving him hairy palms and poor eyesight.....the BSP fittings are usually standard off the shelf stuff...... |

Been doing some more reading and looking. Is Pirtek part H-10-08 not what is needed for the block, rather than getting something re-cut? Or is UNO thread different again (having trouble finding info on that)? |

Yep, but they are bloody exspensive. Easier to mod the other one if you have access to a friend with a lathe |
