Post subject:  starter not engaging

hey ,
i have just had my starter out as i was painting my engine. (1275)

Put it back in last night and it started the engine fine.

Went to start it this morning, and heard a horrible grinding sound as it was trying to turn the engine over. After a couple more tries , nothing. Took it out and bench tested it - its dead.

Luckily i have another starter from a 998. Bench tested fine. I have tried putting it in twice, and all i get is this horrible grinding sound as it tries to turn the engine.

What am i doing wrong?? I tried to grease the end of the starter, but no love.

Did you check the flywheel ring-gear before you put the other starter in? Sounds like you have something getting jammed between the ring-gear and the bendix,

oh and grease on the end of the bendix is eeeeevil ;)

cheers,

Jacob

Take out the starter, wash off any grease with CRC/RP7/WD40, then dry it off by rinsing with petrol/brake clean/startyabarstard, then lube it with powdered graphite. Then the starter bendix will work as well as it can

Make sure that it feely slides (there is a bit small spring pressure) after doing this ^ otherwise you might need a new bendix.

Is the car out of gear ? Secondly... You might have tightened the Terminal bolt a bit to much and spun the field coil link that is soldered to the inside of that bolt. This causes the link to separate from the terminal Stud making the starter "Open Circuit" Just my 2c worth.
