Post subject:  Gauge Question - Oil/Water Temp

Hey guys,
I bought a set of gauges on Ebay and one is a temp gauge. No specification on if it is water or oil. it is an electronic gauge not mechanical.

I'm assuming its a water temp gauge but can I run it as an oil gauge? Im guessing it will depend on the sensor.

Secondly can anyone see an issue with setting it up on a toggle switch so I can see both water and oil temps at the flick of a switch?

If you ae running electrical set up I don't see why you can't have a switch - only problem is the temperature range. Water is usually 40-120 while oil is 40-140 Guess if you used an oil temp gauge it would work - just be a little squashed in the peak water temperature area on the dial.

EDIT - just thought -you may have to use the same temperature sender that matches the gauge in both locations as signal will need to match the dial.

mmm ok well its in the range of a water temp, I might have a crack at making it work anyway, just need to find a sender that will fit the 5/8 thread. Booyah

If it is the one with a Higher range (140-150C) you can use it for both jobs. Fit a sender in both the water jacket and a sender in the sump and have the sender wires going to a change over switch and you will be able to keep an eye on both sources of temperatures. However remember that these gauges take a while to peak, they are not instantaneous.

Great idea, oil temp gauge. I have one fitted to the Cooper (due for engine overhaul), so now I keep one eye on the oil pressure & one eye on the oil temp and leave it to my wife to tell me if I'm going to hit something.

Thank God for the MOKE - no gauges at all to worry about.
Even petrol, just lean over and look into the tank!
