 Post subject: Replacing Wheel Bearings

need to replace the front wheel bearings on the disc brake van.

is there anything i should be aware of before i jump into this ?

are they the same as replacing bearings on a disc brake old holden or ford ?

all input greatly appreciated

A great job as long as you have the right size CV socket and don't mind paying attention to a little preloading..

I really thought there was a how-to on this one...where have I put it...

Anyone seen a rogue how-to anywhere??

thanks mick.

so i take it that it`s a fairly straight forward job ?

i had the same problem as one of the other members with the hub nut coming loose,to the point that it snapped the split pin.

Jayson, go and find the lastest update on my car in the gallery. Although not a how to I did take lots of pictures along the way. It should give you a good starting point as to what is involved. What I did in no way replaces a manual or the Dr's how to.

The Doc's 'How to' on wheel bearing replacement is quite good, however, with a Timken Bearing if you find you think you need to machine the spacer, the hub is stuffed. Machining the spacer is not a cure, only a good hub is. The situation with Non-Timken Bearings may be different, I don't know as I only use the Timken ones.

thanks for all the replies & the pictures 1018 & to the good Dr for the how to.

pretty sure i have my head around it now.have never done them on a front wheel drive car before.

As GT mowog mentioned in another related thread recently i think, inspect all parts of the assembly for wear, as if the nut is loose, it all flops around and everything wears. So replacing the wheelbearings might not be the end of the cure.

I've seen one where it got to the point where everything, including the cv joint, nut and collar needed replacing
