| Post subject: | assembling disc brakes |
hey guys, just recieved the minispares front disc brake kit to replace my drums. I have never assembled brakes before, so i was hoping for some feedback as to whether im doing it right. I wasnt sure which way the drive flange goes , and the same with the bearing, which i tapped in with a hammer. 
Is this the right way the bearing/seal goes?? Also what is the other big washer for? I only appear to have one? 
And what are these parts for?? 
Any advise would be much appreciated!! |

Need more pics of the hubs to be certain of what I'm seeing. In the last pic : The two washers with tangs hanging off are your (very important!!) ball-joint lock-washers. The two little round bits near them are ball-joint seats. & the other two "washers" in the bag look like ball-joint shims. Do you have a factory manual? These items are easily identified if you do, plus it will answer some of your other questions. cheers, Jacob |

These videos from Miniaddicts on youtube are very helpful for novices. They've done ball joints and wheel bearings, the two most crucial parts of assembling the front end. With these and a Haynes manual, you'll be okay. If in doubt though, ask someone. The spacer you have in the third pic is matched to the bearings, so don't mix 'em up. |

thanks guys, yep glad i asked as the bearing was the wrong way around. never got a link to any build instructions but it looks like i do now! I'll keep at it tonight

When you look at the disk brake kits on minispares, underneath it has tabs: "also bought" "kit contains" and then "Instructions" the instructions tab has links to the instructions but you need a password that they send out on your invoice. I haven't used these myself but it might be worth looking at. Either way theres good links in this thread so good luck with it.

any tips on how to remove the ball joints on the existing hub? They are very stubborn! |

You will need a deep socket or ring spanner to undo them and then reassemble them as well as a fair amount of brawn....BUT....although they may seem to be fine, used ball joints can be a false economy. Consider replacing them with brand new ones seeing as the rest is all new as well. It would be a shame to see the new ball joints working loose or clicking through their movement as they are elliptically worn. |

The minispares kit came with new ball joints so i should be ok
I got them off
Now i was under the impression the cv joint should just slide off the driveshaft. To my suprise the whole driveshaft slid right out. In the process of hammering the cv joint off the driveshaft, the end with the ball bearings (that goes into the gearbox) came off and the bearings fell out. Is it now just a case of putting them back in? I have also lost 1 bearing, if i can't find it tomorrow are they easy to find? |
