What is the go with NSW Personalized plates. I am buying a car from there and it has personalized plates being MGB#7#. do these belong to the owner or will they have to be handed in if I buy the car ? Any info appreciated.

Pretty sure all plates in NSW belong to the RTA (even though we have to pay for them).

Just looked at the myplates website which states "The fees you pay give you SNP Rights your plates, but the plates themselves belong to the RTA." http://www.myplates.com.au/about_us/index.html

Will depend on how old the plates are. Up until about 5 years ago you could order the plates as a one off fee and that was it. Now you have to order and pay for the plates PLUS pay an annual lease on the registration.

Ask the owner to look at the rego papers for the vehicle. If they are a lease plate it will have it listed as an additional charge.

As Dave said however in NSW you NEVER own the numberplate unlike other states. Most likely that plate will be an annual fee of around $90 clams on top of normal registration.

They will always be the property of the RTA even if personalised. The seller has the option of transferring them with the sale; handing them in; or placing them in storage for an annual fee for him to transfer onto another car later. even if he has another car ready to place them on straight away, he STILL has to put them in storage first! - the RTA know how to gouge.

Given that you are taking the car interstate though(?) there is not much point buying them with the car. You will be required to hand them back but you can do that QLD roads (or whatever they are called).

As others said, whether they cost an annual fee on top of std rego costs will depend on when the owner purchased them - but that will only apply to you if you continue to have it NSW registered.

I will not realy need them I was thinking if it was possible to sell them to someone that needs them and can use in NSW to recover some money that I am paying for the car. Here in Qld you can sell plates of that sort. I have mu MINNIE Prestiege plates on the Comnvertible. They are worth a few Buchs.

So, how does the NSW Number Plate Auctions work?

You are selling/transferring the "right to display" rather than the actual plates.
In order to "sell the plates" under your name in NSW; you would first need to put them in storage with the RTA, that would be a bit hard if you're not a NSW resident. I can't see the owner willingly doing that on your behalf unless you've developed a relationship during the purchase process.

RTA have a technical line the number of which is probably buried somewhere deep on their website. I would give them a call next week and get an appropriate answer straight from them. The plates don't sound like they are worth much anyhow other than being "MG" unless the number is 07x which relates to a model year number (my guess would be x=0-9 : p)

That's called the Registration papers where he fills in the "Notice of transfer and Notice of disposal section"

He also needs a receipt from the current owner stating the rego; VIN number and purchase price of the vehicle that is signed by the current owner in addition to the rego papers.

Tony , i would assume that you would have to hand them back in to your relevant Traffic Authority when you transfer the rego into your name, it sounds like the owner
has relinguished " ownership " , as such, by letting the plates go with the sale.
As for the NSW RTA, without being too derogitory, ( spelling ) , as far as i'm concerned,
Mrs Kelly wouldn't of let Ned play with them !!!

Tony mine had them and there is no value to us in QLD. I had thought of selling them but there was no value in doing because of the way the RTA does the plates.

When you register the car in QLD you have to hand them in along with a copy of the transfer slip from NSW.
