Hey guys i know the whole nose description isnt very good but i'm after a bit of help with what i should be looking for when i pull the car apart tomorrow. going around a corner today at full lock right, i heard what i can only describe as a clunk, accompanied by the steering wheel jumping to the right, then springing back again. I thought what the F was that to myself then drove back around the block to see if there was anything on the road i could have hit that had caused this reaction.. . didn't find anything So i let it go and went to the shops, same thing turning into the shops full right lock, clunk!. thought stuff it got my shopping and went home. on the way home (5k) didn't ever hit full lock right and didn't ever hear a clunk. so i put the car up on stands gave the wheel a shake around and checked to see if i was missing anything or if anything had come loose. nothing that i could find, wheel was solid Thaught stuff it i'll find out what the hell this is and around 10pm went for another drive to the supermarkets empty carpark where i promptly put it into full lock both directions and drove in circles till my tyres started slipping. i've got yoko ao48's so they take a lot to slip. anyway full lock left not a problem, full lock right, nothing until i got up a bit of speed and i could 'feel' that the tyres were having to fight a little bit then clunk, clunk, wheel jumps over and back again. i haven't a clue what the hell it is, i'm thinking the steering is passing a pivot point or something to do with the cv is letting go/jamming up. i'm pulling it apart tomorrow to find out but if anyone has ideas or wants to come over and give me a hand/talk minis in Northcote i'm more than happy to hear any suggestions Cheers all! |

I am sure that this is not all, but check: All ball joints, wheel bearings, wheel bearing retaining nut, u-bolts retaining rack, steering rack ball joints, front tie rod rubbers, drive shaft universal joints, cv joints, lower arm rubbers, upper arm bearings, knuckle joint, wheel nuts, shock absorbers. Be methodical and check one thing at a time. Reference your workshop manual. cheers michael |

Have not had this problem...but the wheel "jumping back" caught my eye. I'm guessing a rack & pinion problem with a damaged/missing portion of the worm gear. Have had a CV cage break up...going straight ahead...but after the sounds of imminent doom on turning at all. Lost my balls too. |

cv cage is busted over one of the ball bearings. turned the wheel round up on the jack and felt the ball moving around inside the rubber boot....that cant be good. anyway pulled out the bearing and the bits of cage that had broken off which i'm guessing were getting jammed every now and then causing the clunk and pulling the steering wheel to the side on full lock. now i'm one bearing down on a public holiday, worst easter ever! but hey at least its something i can fix fairly easily. thanks for the help everyone |
