Post subject: | Clubby to Roundy |
Just introduced myself on another forum and one of the guys has a clubby and the PO put a roundy front on it. The present Owener has been told it needs to certified by an Engineer. He is in NSW & I don't think this is rite as I know michaelb is doing this to his LS |

being from vic i could be totally wrong, but.... as far as i'm aware, even tho it's still a 'mini' part, it's not the same 'mini' part and also with us, if any structual/ big welding is done ie: the big task of putting internal hinges... *not that i would, i'd just import... cause i have that money floating around... ![]() as i said at the start, i maybe totally wrong, being from vic, that's just my understanding. also, why not just buy a darn roundie if you want one instead of stuffin with a club that someone else may want. i have a clubby, and want a roundie, doesn't mean i'm gonna send clubby to the butcher, just means one will be the "Mrs's car"... |

How would the authorities find out? Its not like anyone working for any of the transport departments in the country would even notice, thats assuming that they even knew that there was a difference. Tim |

I thought if the part was a direct replacement then it is ok. I wouldnt even mention it to the authorities. It would be like putting guards from an ED falcon onto an EB falcon imo. |

Hard to say, I think we'd all be assuming and guessing and obviously to be 100% certain you would need to talk to your RTA group & or a engineer certified in this area. IMO yes the panels are interchangeable (outer wings, inner wings, bonnet hinge mounts, front valance etc). The safety problem is the factory welded these parts on good and properly and someone doing the conversion in their back shed may not reattach these panels as strongly. With out a crash test you wont know if it's still strong enough.... ![]() If I was doing it I'd try my best to make it as strong as possible to match the factory version. I wouldn't bother with the authorities unless you have a few things that need approval. |

No doubt, it will need engineering certification. |

I'm not up to date with all the laws regarding modification.... but... I would agree with what Timbo said. Word for word. |

I'd Agree.and most of the people doing the Blueies weren't into cars at that age..Unless you told them it had a clubby front and now its got a round front end. I got knocked back couse it had not front bumped. I turned up the following weekend with 1 on but didn't inspect to see how it was attached. I know a bumper is different to guards but even the police of today would not know what was orginal from a clubby to a 850 |

I concur. If you use roundy inner guards as well, what is left there that needs to be `engineered'? I'm putting a UK Clubby front panel on the 77 Clubby van (coz it's all they sell) and it will need 2 teardrop mounts or spacers. Needs engineering??? ![]() ![]() |

Its not really a modification. Its just a replacement of panels which have a slightly different shape but are made for the body. No modification of the new parts as they just fit. I made sure All panels were welded at the same spacings and locations as the previous spot welds, so I expect it to be just as strong. If people were being pedantic then one could argue that all new panels are not suitable for old minis because they are now made of thinner metal, therefore when ANY repairs are carried out with replacement panels the car is no longer the same strength? |

I have a feeling that this thread could become interesting ![]() Do you need to have a 998 mini certified to fit an 1100 or 1275? Nup! So whats the difference? ![]() |

if you had a hot 1100 you can still have drums on the front..but if you have a standard 1275 you need Disc although the 1100 could put out more HP..I was going to say something else but ill shut it now |

![]() Do you need to have a 998 mini certified to fit an 1100 or 1275? Nup!So whats the difference? ![]() Technically yes you do ![]() ![]() If the new engine was not a factory option at the time your car rolled off the production line the authorities reckon it dose need mod plating. ie. when you fit a 1275cc engine to a 1962 Morris 850, you need to up grade the brakes to std Cooper S spec or greater and even though all parts bolt straight on and no structural mods are needed it is still modifying the car from what the manufacture intended the car to handle. Remember the manufacture decreased the size and power of the mini engine before it was released (prototypes had 970cc engines, when they were officially released they had 848cc engines). They original didn't intend for minis to be powerful, even though the body and all it's parts can handle well over double what they were originally intended to do. |
