Post subject: | Carby Leaking |
Yet another problem found: had the car idling in the driveway today & discovered a leak coming from the engine bay. upon further inspection it`s petrol leaking from the bottom of the carby.looks like it`s leaking more than the carby is using. it`s a hs4 & supposedly had a kit through it not long before i got it(about 10 months ago) is it time for a rebuild or could it be something simple ? i`m guessing this could be causing my problem of the motor to breaking down under load. all advice appreciated jayson |

I think there was a particular brand or bad batch of Jets recently. Most likely, that'll be what it is. |

if the jet is of the type with a brass nut and a plastic tube with a spring over it, it can be as simple as just tightening the brass nut a smidge. Better to undo it and reseat the tube, but still... |

If it's the type with a black rubber hose that pushes onto a plastic barb fitting each end I would bin it and get the (genuine) one Simon described above. A few of us have had trouble with them blocking up when running premium unleaded... ![]() |

well you could also...if you have Electric pump..Turn the ign on and pump will start and have some cardboard under both the carb and float bowl and see where its leaking. If you can't find it then or using a mechanical pump turn her on and let it idle an put the carboard there and see if you can locate it then. I know its only idle and just the IGn on but it still may be leaking then also and be able to fins where from |

before you start farking with the jets does the float bowl have a breather hole in it, are you sure that fuel is coming from the bottom, just check that fuel is not coming from somewhere higher, its a thin fluid and will flow to the lowest point on the carby. if its coming from the breather the float in the bowl may not be set, or the jet in the float could be blocked. Does the car run normally. You may be getting more fuel through than the carby needs and its bleeding out the breather hole. Not all float caps have a breather hole, tiny pin hole in the cap. just make sure where your fuel leak is actually coming from before you start playing with things. |

thanks for all the advice. turned out it was the jet leaking so changed it for another that i had,now it`s running like a piece of crap.started up first go & sounded fine, went for a short drive up the road & the revs dropped until it cut out. wouldn`t start again until i physically lifted the piston in the carb up,then ran rough as guts home. please help i`m just about ready to sell this car,it`s just one problem after another.not enjoying the mini experience this time around. |

When you replace the jet you might need to re-centre the jet. If you lift the piston and let it fall does move freely or does it bind near the bottom? |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GRAcqDySog http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60Bj_2cZQnc EDIT: just found this on centring the jet, same guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxVFCY_1aSA These two part videos are pretty sweet, good information on your carby. And i might add, if your jet was leaking and you have replaced it you may need to adjust the jet. The jet should have a perfectly round hole in it. Your old jet may have worn rubbing on the needle and have an egg shaped hole in it. Only slightly. So it may be running a little lean because its not getting as much fuel through as you open it up. Watch the vids above to learn how to centre the jet correctly. Everyone should watch these vids, they are pretty informative on a very important part of your car. There is also HIF vids from the same guy. Valve Grommets that you get in a gasket kit are also handy to keep to use as a gasket to help fix this problem if you are in the middle of nowhere and cant get a new jet.
