Ok i was driving my 71 clubman then took it of the road to do some work on the suspension and a couple of rust repairs and stuff.Took about two months or so,then i chuck the battery back in to start her up and nothing. I tracked that back to a poor earth at the battery and away we go, its cranking now and cranking and cranking. So i have fuel but it seems i lack spark, i pulled a plug and did the test, nothing. I am not much up on this stuff if something needs replacing i am fine but i can't diagnose to save myself. So what i would like to know is i have no spark where do i start to figure this out.

well you're on the right track...

you've pulled a spark plug out and found it doesn't spark when held against the motor

do the same thing with a screwdriver inserted into the spark plug lead and held near the motor, see if that sparks, if it does, get some new plugs

if it doesn't spark there, then do the same thing with the lead from the coil to the distributor. Pull it off the distributor and put your screwdriver in there. If it does spark, then take the distributor cap off and clean the terminals inside the cap, also have a good look at the points, and turn the motor over and look to see if the points spark as they open. You can also flick the points open with a screwdriver, but be gentle

if those checks fail, then check the 12v supply to the coil using a test light

I always advice people to check a circuit starting where the power source originates from. Ignition Switch, Fuse box, coil Distributor. Like that you will know how far the power is getting.
