The flywheel on my 1275 motor has had the timing markes machined off when the PO has had it lightened. I have now replaced the marks by finding TDC on the engine and restamping where I think they should be. I note that in some of the workshop manuals the picture of the TDC marks show them next to one of the pressure plate bolts and this is the same as my Cooper S, but on this flywheel they are about halfway in between 2 of the pressure plate bolts. Can I assume there are different model flywheels and mine is OK? This flywhell is a leter version and the centre is one piece. I even took it off the crank last night to check as I thought I had fitted it on 180deg out but when I tried to do this I found there is now way the keyed washer will allow for this. So I can only assume it is fitted correctly. |

There were about 1/2 a dozen different flywheels, maybe more. Somewhere I do have the ID chart, but there where at least 2 (from memory) that had the timing marks as you have described. Those that are 2 piece are less suitable for lightening than the one piece ones, I'm not saying Un-suitable, just that you can take more off the one piece ones with greater safety. |

You're welcome, but just on another look, I'm nit too sure if that is in fact any help as it only goes to march 1968 and you said your's was a one piece (mmmm.....I like a nice one piece!!) and that ID chart doesn't seem to cover them. I think I have a latter one. I'll see if I can dig it up....... In the mean time, have a look at this one piece

How much could be safely machined off that one piece? I've heard stories of lightened ones flying apart destructively, I can only imagine what might happen if that occurred. Tim |

Tim Lots of guys do lighten the factory flywheels and don't have problems, but I have seen the results from them exploding, not nice so the memories I have of those have turned me right off that idea forever. Lightened Steel ones IMO are not expensive, so I go that way if I'm after a lightened flywheel. It also seems that the steel ones are lighter too. |

I'm thinking that all threads need to be interspersed with photos of one piece flywheels. 
I'm sure this would reduce the amount of friction and arguments. |
