Is it worth getting disks on a bored out 998,and how much would they cost to install,does Ikea do disks in a flat pack :P

I'll keep it short.
You don't need them.
You'll need about $1000 for 8.4's, allow more if you want to run 10" wheels.

On a 998 even if it is bored out, the drums are definately fine :wink:

discs are a relatively expensive thing as well.

If they are fitted - great...if not i dont see it as an issue.

I'm the opposite. If I were thinking of driving any mini full time I would definitely get discs.

I cant wait to have disc brakes, when the mini was my only car I had so many near misses cos the brakes were/are so crap. I cant count how many times I had to run a red light and swerve to avoid ramming the car in front cos the brakes wouldnt pull me up in time.

I have a Mini with drums....it's fine....I also have a Mini with discs....should be mobile very soon....and I would say it will pull up a tad better than drums :P

Got cash? Get discs!

have you guys driven a car with well adjusted brakes? The problem being, some
people just dont look after their cars and as a result your brakes dont work as well.

Mate, Drums are cool on a 998. as people have said, Discs are good, but you need to
pay for them. they are not cheap. :wink:

Properly adjusted drums are awesome.
But they fade and turn to crap within a month of "normal" mini driving.

I'd strongly recommend the disc brakes.
Not exactly hard to fit, and for the price, a good option for safety.

I can tell you that if my drum brakes were adjusted properly OR if i had dics brakes, i may not have the dent in the front of the car.
But i suppose its driver ability too.

Go for the discs mate, you wont regret it.

Oh, MiniSport here in adelaide sell BRAND new 7.5" dics kits for $1995- quite well priced and i think it has everything you need to put em on.
I know thats one thing i'll be saving for in the near future!

Na Ah It's the other way around disks are self adjusting you still need to top up the brake fluid as the pads wear but appart from that they are self adjusting.

With drums they need adjusting regularly which is why alot of peoples drums don't pull them up successfully so they whinge about drums being CR@P it just they need adjusting in most cases.
Drums also suffer from heat fade more that discs but on a road car it should be rare that you get them this hot

The disc set-ups themselves are the expensive bit. If you buy a whole kit, fitting them is relatively easy.

prperly adjusted bled and well looked after drums work very well with an un modified engine, if you were going to go higher say supercharger etc, i would get discs although, the size of the engine doesnt change the speed you have to do on the road so in theory it wouldnt matter, but for the price, drums are fine!

I've never yet had a Mini with disks - except the Moke which is not road registered yet.

I drive my van every day and it has rebuilt drums and a modified 1100 engine. I find the drums more than adequate provided they are kept adjusted.

However, to rebuild drums properly you new new wheel cylinders (about $25 x 4) new front hoses ($20 x2), new front shoes (can't remember, maybe $30), the drums machined ($30 pr from memory at mates rates) and probably new wheel bearings ($50 x 2). So you are up for around $250 just to rebuild your drums. Only you can decide whether you would rather save that money and put it towards disks instead. Second hand sets in useable condition start at around $600 if you can find them and are happy to use 12" rims.

For the record, I am planning to upgrade to 7.5" S disks when I have all the bits. Just missing the uprights now. I don't really like 12" rims on early Minis, so the van will not get the cheaper 8.4" disks.

There's also the Honda conversion to fit under 12" wheels - see the huge thread on this forum under "Mini Mods". 8)

Stay Drums - keeps you honest and within capabilities.

In all seriousness, the drums are more than adequate. Keep them clean(I remove the drums every month and blow out the dust and crap), well adjusted and you will be fine.

On the subject, I had to use mine in anger this afternoon when a moron ACT driver decided to pull up in the right hand lane on the Monaro hwy to answer the phone. The stupid person didnt even get out of the lane - just stopped! Anyhoo, the drums pulled me up quicker than the fellow in front(VT commodore)and I stopped with room to spare - a little squealing of the tyres but only right at the end. The $10 outlay for that little brake adjuster spanner has more than paid for itself!
