I am confused.... :?

This pic is not my carbs, but basicly the same...

Image

How do the air cleaners fit to the carbs? It looks like a part is missing from each carb. On a standard twin SU air box, there are 2 round holes that fit onto the carb......where do they fit to?!?

There are two alloy elbow pieces that join the carbs to the air filter box. Is that what you mean?

the one pictured is 1 1/2" which is oval shaped, 1 1/4" are round

really hard to find them for a twin S air filter box, they are not the same as fitted to a single 1 1/4" SU.

I was going to try and modify a standard 1 1/4" carb trumpet, it'd work, you've got to bore a hole in the one for the right hand carb for the air hole that goes up under the piston, and the threads are longer. I found a complete NOS setup, so didn't have to worry ;)

There used to be pancake filters that bolted directly to two of the mounting holes you can see in your picture on the flange....are you talking about the standard Cooper type air cleaner arrangement or seperate after market units???

You can mod an 850 etc elbow for an S RH carb- Araldite is wonderful stuff.. takes to alloy like a duck to water. 8)

I believe that `Police pack' S's had Ramflo filters on their HS4s, so sez my mate up the street who has one of the last of 'em with the Clubbie doors...

I have seen that type of air cleaner....they look cool, but I am keen for the standard twin SU metal air box.

I ran a Brock Dunnydore with a ramflo years ago, then went back to the Standard brock metal air filter....ever since then I just prefer the standard look. Although with a single SU I would not use the pissy standard air box

It's going to be a little hard to find an Original twin Carb Airfilter box unless you have the $ or you are good to some a special freind..Sorry no I dont have one :?
Otherwise I'd not go with the elbo and use the after market Airfilters

A bit more info. The adaptors for the Cooper and S twin carb setup have a bulge on both sides of the adaptor (Part No 17H8379) where it bolts to the carb. The single carb adaptor (Part No 27H1389) has a bulge on only one side.
Why you may well ask? The single HS2 fitted to 850/998 motors generally has only one passage to the underside of the piston chamber and it is on the left when looking into the carb intake. The twin carb setup has LH and RH carbs and the passage to the underside of the piston is on opposite sides on the LH and RH carbs. So the adaptor for the twin setup is made to suit either LH or RH carbs. However it becomes a bit more complicated as later S twin carb setups have LH and RH bodies which each have 2 transfer passages to the underside of the piston. These are generally called "Quick Lift Body" carbs. They are used in conjunction with Quick Lift pistons which also have 2 passages on the underside of the piston face (where the needle goes in). Earlier types have only one hole and its on the vertical face of the downstream side of the piston. It gets even more confusing as quick lift pistons were introduced before the quick lift bodies.
The quick lift pistons and bodies presumably were introduced to give better acceleration, fuel economy and reduce emissions? as the pistons would lift faster and not restrict airflow as much as non quick lift assemblies. At least I think that was the reason. Any body got any further info on this matter?
So depending on what carbs you have, as the DOC says, you may only have to modify one adaptor to make it fit a RH carb or 2 adaptors to fit LH and RH quick lift bodies.

Not sure if this helps or hinders.
Regards
RonR

Get some nice Bling trumpets & put sox on 'em.. more power!:P
Problem with the `elbow' is the stud inside that holds the filter box on. Creates serious airflow restriction, according to what I've read (Vizard, or was it Trickey...)
