Post subject:  Speedo question
Probably a noob question

but if the speedo needle looks more like a geiger counter (wandering around instead of staying at 100 k)

is that a broken cable or more likely a loose connection? its on a clubman
and more importantly is it easy to fix?

If the needle wanders between 90 and 110 when you're going 100, chances are you're driving a mini. :)

Mine did that a while ago. I got the speedo serviced (the grease had dried out) and put a new speedo cable on (the old one looked fine so I'd say it was the speedo's fault). Needle doesn't wander any more.

The speedo probably needs a service. The cable can make it bounce if it is dry and kinked but it is more likely to be the speedo itself.

There is a couple of spots in the odometer that are lubed with grease. When the grease turns hard it can get a bit jumpy. When the gears in the odometer finally strip the speedo needle will stop bouncing.

Could also be that the cable is a whisker too long and puching too hard in to the back of the speedo. Chack the cable for dried grease and kinking as well.

Becareful not to buy a 120Mph one off Ebay, plenty of 90Mph ones with afternmarket 120 faces on them!

Dont bother getting one of the nice kph ones from UK either. Mines done
23,000klms and is no longer accurate. Reads 110kph and car is actually doing 128.Not isolated either. Mate bought his at the same time and had the same problem, though his has now been rebuilt using bits from old aussie speedos

My speedo on the Mk2 Cooper S is up the spout as well. Some days I crawl up my driveway and the stupid thing will flick between 10 and 40 mph !! I never really knew what speed I was doing on the road so fitted a 12 volt plug and connect a GPS to it. 60 mph on the Gps is 75Mph on the speedo. Technology !! Ahh I love it.
