I'm running Valvoline SF 20W/50 now, in Ha-Ha, while the engine is new. I'm impressed with how it keeps its viscosity (and oil pressure) when hot. For hard driving or track work I like Castrol Formula R 25W/50, or Penrite HPR30. Don't like Castrol GTX2- I have it in Barney (will change soon). Oil pressure goes south after freeway running.... ![]() |

the GTX is good enough for me - oil pressure is around 65-70 and goes down to 55 at idle and when really warm. Its cheap and I have had no complaints apart from it really gets dirty quicker than the other oils. As soon as I can see the "black" come into the oil i change it(about 3000k's) I want to try a thicker oil to stop the oil leak from the back of the rod change hole(I should just get pro-active and put the kit in!!!) Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

Nah. Dont go the super slippery super synthetic. Its too slippery for your gearbox synchros, selectors, etc. Yes, its great oil for your new camry, and it will be good for a little while in your Mini, but soon enough you will have crunchy gears... And thats an expensive one to fix. I don't think that is is very good for your diff, either. Not good in all. I use Penrite HPR30. Always have, and it seems fine. Never had any troubles. Oil pressure stays on the right side of the gauge. |

that's exactly what Pops runs at.....and wait for this..... I was given a heap of stuff with him, which included 5L of "Price Brand' 20/50 oil........that's what is running in there at the moment. gafmo has seen the oil pressure....not bad for the most crap oil ever made!! ![]() |

Last 3 oil changes i've used Castrol Formula R 25w50, but this time (last Monday, infact) I decided to try HPR30. Sometimes, when the oil level is full up on the dip stick, when the engine has done quite a bit of work (like driving the great ocean road, or after an hour on the freeway), it can blow ALOT of smoke out the pipe (rarely, though). Pull over and let the engine cool for a minute or 2, and it's fiiiine. Maybe the oil is getting too hot and I need an oil cooler, so decided to try the HPR30, which is a little thicker when hot (isn't it?). ![]() |

What would you recommend for a 1430cc with 13 row oil cooler that has a tendency to run a little hot? I don't do track work or super long drives, but it does heat up quick. I have noticed the oil pressure, when really hot, get quite low. Should I try a thicker oil? EDIT - I'm not fully clued up on my oils, but is a 20W-60 oil thicker than a 20W-50 at higher temps? |

A decent cooling system. Start off with a good old flusheroo of the galleries, etc. Do a flow test. ![]() Or have one done. ![]() |

Due soon Neither of our cars have a cooler at the moment. Barney's pressure with GTX2 is fine around town, but after a freeway run it drops badly. A few miles later at sedate speeds and it recovers. Motor's only done ~10,000 miles. OTOH, Mini Ha-Ha has over 50psi at idle after a freeway run. So, Barney's about to get some Valvoline SF 20W/50 too. This is the cheap stuff in the black 4L bottle with white label, around $9 - $11 each. ![]() |

I don't like Valvoline....purely for the fact that Jonny Laws flogged the stuff for so many years on the TV......Valvoline, ya know what I mean.... ![]() Who remembers the 'Duckhams' (spelling?) oil TV ad back in the early 90's......If I remember correctly it showed a garage with Rolls Royce's and Jaguars....and a Butler walking with a bottle of Duckhams oil on a silver tray....he walks past the Rollers and Jags....to a black round nose (Cooper S ?) being worked on by a young guy....and say's "Your oil sir"..... I think there was classical music playing, and it switches to heavy rock when the butler gets to the Mini...... ![]() I remember it well....bought some of the stuff back then and even put the Duckhams sticker in my GTR Torana engine bay ![]() |
