Post subject:  coil burnt out

just had my car at the mechanics because it wouldnt start, he said the problem was the coil. I did have spark but maybe it was too weak. The co il is relatively new as well.

I have just installed my audio system which has 2 amp's running it and whilst doing it i did have the ignition on for a while. Would this of been the cause of my coil screwing up?

Is it ok to leave the ignition on at all, or is it a big no-no?

That'll do it alright. Generally, it's not a good idea to leave the ignition on as you'll burn out the coil, as you discovered. If you need power but don't have an accessory position on the barrel, just disconnect the coil lead while you work.

How is your coil mounted? I had mine mounted so the bottom was rubbing against the oil feed pipe. Over a period of a few months it slowly put a tiny hold in the bottom of the coil and rendering it usesless once the oil emptied out. It took me two coils before I figured that one out.
