Post subject:  Barney's "Restyled" Rear End

As some of the f'book astute people may have noticed, Barney had his rear end restyled by a young lass in an Astra on Thursday night  .

Now, I'm faced with the task of having it fixed, thankfully all covered by the good folk at NRMA Classic Insurance.

I'm going with Jackson Bros here in Newcastle, but wanted to get some advice so I make sure Barney's "S" replica status is closely adhered to.

Here's the before and after shots...

So...

Is this boot lid I need or is there an "aussie" lid available elsewhere? 133 parnds from MiniSport. I can see that the number plate section is heaps smaller on my car.

Image

Items below are from MiniSport in the UK.

Boot Hinges: 49 parnds.

Image

Right side tail light assembly: 31 parnds.

Image

Morris Cooper Boot Badge: 27 parnds.

Image

Stainless Bumper (with holes for overriders/nerf bars): 54 parnds

Image

Number plate lamp (chrome): 26 parnds.

Image

Number plate carrier: 14 parnds.

Also, the New England plates are damaged, but they are no longer available to be remade.

Should I go for:

White on Black:

or

Black Euro:

Both plates cost $400, but hey I'm not paying for it!

Hi

The boot lid issue is one you will have to decide on but as you can see the one from the UK you have pictured is not correct for an aussie car, it should be like what is on the car. This may be one of those "aussie" items that are not available new. Of course the number plate panel has to match the bootlid you use.

Really sorry to see your misfortune. :( I had a similar experience last year.

The boot lid you've got is an Aussie one. They're different to the UK bootlids. There are three common bootlids - 850, Aussie, and Rover. The 850 bootlid looked just like an Aussie one in style, except the number plate holder was much wider. For appearances, you really want to stick with the Aussie bootlid. That said, they're getting hard to find... :(

The other parts you've listed... From the photo, I'd be surprised if they get replaced. The bumper, sure, but the overriders and nerf bars may well be re-used, just installed on the new bumper. The boot hinges may be re-used - mine were. That said, £49? You'll get them cheaper than that locally. :) The tail light doesn't look damaged at all. Mine was smashed, but, like you, I have the Aussie 2 screw tail light. You can't buy them new anymore, either - the UK ones are all 3 screws (which Aussie cars had for a while). As long as the baseplate - the chrome part in the body - isn't bent (and mine took a direct hit without bending), it'll be fine. Maybe new screws, but I got the impression they're easier to repair than the 3 screw bases. The only problem is that the new glass available for the 2 screw lights doesn't last as well as what you've probably got on there...

If your repairer has any issues, I'd definitely refer them to one of the local mini businesses. :) They're going to have more chance of having exactly what you need than anyone overseas. Going overseas for this wouldn't save you money (even if it did, it's not your money!), it'll only cost you time.

And your plate..? It doesn't really look damaged... I didn't get a new plate after my crash. Maybe you'll be able to keep the New England plate? :)

The Australian boot lid is not available OS, nor is the number plate flap.
The flap you have pictured is from the early wider boot lid.
Unless you can find NOS boot lid and number plate flap you will have to go second hand.

Sorry to see the result of your accident but look on the bright side, It could be a good opportunity to get the small "S" in the right place. "Just to make sure Barney's "S" replica status is closely adhered to"

I'll see if I can hunt down an aussie bootlid, that said, I dont mind the look of the UK ones. Overriders and nerf bars are fine (right hand overrider is a little bent), but the bumper will need replacing. The right hand bootlid hinge is stuffed. The taillight is really only the brake lens, so that will be an easy fix. Number plate is actually bent, but the pic does not really show it. At the end of the day, I just want it back to what it was, which was pretty darn straight. It's a pain the arse as its a daily driver, but it will end up getting freshened up as a result.

Thanks Dave,

Where should the "S" be?

This wont be as easy a fix as first appears, you can't get the 2 screw lenses, not originals anyway. Most people that have had any aftermarket ones swear at them (not by them:wink: ), they fade at an alarming rate.

It should be lower, I think there was a thread somewhere that had measurements, I'll see if I can find it :)

id say the number plate will be bent back as close as possible as well.
insurance will want to get out of it as cheap as possible so wont go splurging on new parts if they dont have too

Evan, I think I've got a spare Oz bootlid you can have. Was original on Mini HaHa, it had a couple of small pinholes but they have been welded.
I just need to find it...
