Post subject:  firewall numbers

What do they mean.. i think i have an early 63 shell and it has the numbers 24333. Is this the id??? Is it correct?!?!

Where is it stamped.

Normally a number was stamped to the firewall on early cars (up to 69), and would match the "Car number" on the ID plate also attached to the firewall.

The ID plate also had the Type (or Model code), Eng No. and paint colours for that particular car.

BMC normally started the Car No. numbering for each model at 501.

24333 seems a big number for as early as 63 (if it's an Aus car) but I don't really have a clue in that Dept.

Normally drivers side just behind master cylinders. ID plate usually rivetted just above.

Photo below is typical (not my car), stamped numbers just visible below right bottom of ID plate.

I notice the same on the 73 Leyand after it was blasted, had M27 and some numbers from memory.

All Australian cars had at least the number stamped as far as I know. Just that without the plate then hard to tell the model/eng no'/paint.

Im sure I've seen some cars with the id plate over on the passenger side firewall. Again I'm not that familiar with earlier cars. Someone more familiar with early cars will know.

In fact an old bloke told me once that the plate and rivets were shipped out with the car and attached at the dealership when the car was prepared for sale.

The Car Number would normally be the one used on the rego papers.

There may also be a number and a code stamped in the Radiator shroud known on early cars as the body number and usually approx 500 less than the Car no. because thay started at 001. Usually buried under lots of paint as it was stamped very early in the assembly of the car before any painting. I think it was just used by the factory before the car was given its final Car number.

After about 69 they started to stamp both the model code and the numbers into the radiator shroud and somtimes a body number into the bonnet gutter.

The very early CKD 850s were quite different to the later assembled 850s like phillb's.

On mine the car number is stamped on th driver's side of the instrument binnacle hole and another number (possibly the CKD ident number) is stamped opposite on the passenger side. The ID plate is also attached on the passenger side as well.

The ID plate should show both these numbers separated by a slash (if you pardon the expression).
