Post subject: | Oil Seals |
Both the front and the output seal (on crank) are leaking. The question I have is could there be an underlying problem or have the seals just worn out. The motor is a 998 with a 1100 crank and was only rebuilt about 17,000 km ago. Any help would be great. Pete |

I've got a major oil leak in the timing cover oil seal - as a matter of fact its so bad that the car was left outside makka's place yesterday after it dumped the entire sump of oil (atleast 4 littres) inside the engine bay - by leaking onto the harmonic balancer and being hurled around. I'm told that a leaky oil seal there could be because - either the harmonic balancer shaft wasnt lubricated when inserted throught the seal - thus dislocating it or burning it in the first few minutes, maybe the seal hole wasnt clean - people put gasket glue etc in there and it makes the seal loose eventualy. Absence of an oil slinger also causes oil to be flushed against the seal drasticaly shortening its life. In my case I think that the chrome plating on the timing cover causes the seal to pop out. |
