My car jumps out of second gear occasionaly, what could be causing this?
And when changing back to first gear if i dont double clutch it grinds, is this usual for a 4 synchro box?

I highly doubt that when driving through the main street of hay at 40kms per hour and the car jumps out of gear 3 times is considered poor driving habits...

jumping out of gear is normally from worn selectors the selector hub and rounded dog gears , detent springs ,and selector springs..

crunching into first syncro worn dog gears again can just be a tired box

The classic symptoms of a worn gearbox.
Second gear gets the most use, and so suffers the most.

Shouldnt jump on people's comments too brashly Carter.... My Moke used to do that but only when it was revving high in second gear and i pulled off the accelerator (lol = bad driving habit ). I ended up having to get the box reco'd.

Greig Malure did it and adjusted my gear ratios at the same time. Now its got much nicer down low pulling power and shorter gears and i dont rely on revving the crap out of gear number two now....

Although number 3 kinda gets a bashing now...

OK, I'll elaborate. Driving along with your hand on the gearstick for extended periods and / or slaming it through the gears. It wears the selector forks and so it does not allow full engaugement of the gear. When this happens, usually at slow speeds, backing off on the throttle makes it jump out of gear. A new gearbox is not needed, unless it has been doing it for a while, only a selector fork. We actually manufacture special selector forks that last a lot longer than the stock piece of crap.

Like I said - poor driving habbits - you did ask the question and this is the answer. When are you going to grow up? As you are well aware, I can help anyone here, but I only do so for those who are not rude.

While we're on the subject,......
The moke has been jumping out of first when engaged from a stand still.
If I down change into first and then accelerate it's fine and holds gear.
What could I be causing this? As above or something else?

Could be selector forks and / or Third motion shaft bearing.
